Which is probably why Noel writes the majority of the songs and Liam just sings them. Besides, isn't 'totalitarian' a fairly more widespread term than 'acquiesce'? And it's hardly the 'pneurothorax' that the Kaisers managed to get in. Anyway, now that I've defended the 'sis I can get back to the task in hand.
Lyrically, the Monkeys are great because they're not in the slightest bit pretentious, which is something a few recent 'indie' bands have started to do (see Franz and The Killers) and they're not too simple either. None of that verbal filler that the Kaisers go in for (which is great live, but not so great on your mp3 player) and no going for overly simple rhymes. Musically, they're unpolished and sound a bit punk at times, which is brilliantt, but doesn't fit into this whole "glamorous indie rock'n'roll" mythos that the NME are trying to create. That's where the follow up is going to be important I think, in terms of the media anyway, because if they don't get a bit more complex melodically then the knives will be out. Or if they go too far then it's 'Be Here Now' or 'Second Coming' territory where they alienate their fanbase as well as the media.

Rod Stewart, Maggie May. Can't remember if it got to No.1 though...

I got it yesterday, and it is fab. 'Vampires' ain't bad - I can't see what people have got against it.
I've a nasty feeling I'll be bored of the album in a couple of months: I liked it too quickly.

Here are the results of the investigation: "Maggie May" did make number 1, "Roxanne" only made number 12, but "When The Sun Goes Down" does include the line "He told Roxanne to put on her red light."

I dunno, much like a lot of this new wave of Britpop/Indie/Guitar music, call it what you will, it's being overplayed to the point of irritation. Then again after years of having to listen to progressively worse Sterophonics albums and the "masters of the mediocre" Turin Brakes I can't complain too much.

"it's on course to become the fastest selling debut album ever"
I think facts like that are meaningless in 2006 when you consider that junk junk junk junk junk like that frog JUNK gets straight to number one.
Do you rememember when a song going straight to number one meant something?

I do. I think it stopped meaning anything sometime in the early '90s.
Has anyone heard the Sugababes' version of "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor"?
