Using your researcher number to make 42

Snowman - For a story click my name you know you want to

I've notice a few people creating the number 42 using their researcher numbers and i have an idea.
I propose that everyone tries to do it and we'll see from there. and if you're wondering about U1 then if you use the 2 two's from the h2g2 you can get 21 (2 and 1 put together) then mutiplied by the other 2 gives 42!

I think the idea is to use only the numbers in your U#, all of them, and in that order. For example, U37132 (Zoeeeeeeeeeee!!!) = (37*1)+3+2=42.

Stayed up til 3am last night trying to do mine and never got it. smiley - sadface

Using a 2 from h2g2..

2(((5!*07)/5)/8)=42

Mine is 161037.

6*3!+7-1+(0*1) = 42

or 6*7*1^1^0^3

mine was pretty easy.

Mine is easy to. Add all the numbers together and times by 2 and hay presto 42.( 1+7+1+7+5+0=21*2=42.)

I would have like a challenge though. Still the "What God would you be?" Can keep me awake for the next few weeks until i find something else to worry about.

Well mines 26426 so its 2^6=64, 64/4=16, 16+26=42!

For those who just need extra items to keep them awake at night thinking - supposedly you can make ANY number using 4 4's. I. E., 44-44=0, 44/44=1, 4x4/4+4=2etc. etc. We had it worked out to almost 50, with one exception, but lost the list. If anyone wants to try ... smiley - rose

First: there's a page about it here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A530560

Second: you HAVE to use ONLY the numbers in your user number, in the same order.

U161037: 1*6-1+0+37

Can't figure the others out ATM, but I'll try again later.

Lord Preston,

Your's is hard because of all the powers of two. You can get 43 and 41.

Using floor and ceiling functions, I can do them.

U50758: 50 - floor(7/5) * 8 = 42

U48485: 48 - ceil(4/8) -5 = 42

-5+0+7+(5*8) = 42

4-(8/4)+(8*5) = 42

Hmmmm....OK - mine's 173530.

(7*3*(5-3))*1 + 0 = 42.

That was an easy one. Maybe I should watch less Countdown and more revision...

Oooops - I missed the part that said 'do it in order'.

Fortunately, that's easily fixed:
1*(7*3*(5-3)) + 0 = 42

Taadaaaaa

This is great! I was wondering what the deal was with all the math going on in people's names...

Here's mine...

((9x5)x1)+9-2

My eighth grade math teacher had a game similar to this, except she would draw five cards from a poker deck and we had to manipulate them to get 21. I never won.

How about a "Suffusion of Yellow" award? For the person who,in the process of calculating their number, manages to get as far away from 42 as possible.

Back to trying to get 42: I'm terrible at maths, but I think I got it right:

1+7-2*(2+0-9)= -42

(except that the answer is negative)

You mean:

(1 + 7 - 2) * (2 + 0 - 9) = -42
(the brackets are important, else it looks like: 1 + 7 - (2 * (2 + 0 - 9)) = 8 - (2 * (-7)) = 8 +14 = 22.)

You can fix the minus sign by writing it as:

(1 + 7 - 2) * (-2 + 0 + 9) = 42 smiley - smiley
