Hi There
I've just briefly read your entry and the following points spring to mind:
I would like to think that US President John F Kennedy deserves a mention in all this somewhere. After all, he was the one that effectively drew the finishing line to the 'Space Race'and some might say, started it.
Your article also seems to imply that the US lagged badly behind the USSR in this so-called race and that somehow, with a last minute, desperate dash, managed to overtake and win with Apollo 11. That wasn't so!
The USSR initially had one major advantage in that they had a large booster able to put heavy payloads into orbit with which they scored some significant 'firsts'. As far as the race to the moon was concerned, their main problem was that they were unable to produce a reliable launch vehicle capable of putting a lunar lander into orbit.
The US were technologically ahead approximately from the Gemini days and the USSR never caught up. They tacitly conceded that the US were going to be first to land on the moon when Apollo 8 orbited it in Dec '68. Although they did continue to develop their manned landing capability while denying that they had any interest in it.
All the best,
DK

Good point Austin Morris
"First, I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth."
That was Kennedy in 1961, thereby embedding a national obsession in the consciousness of the people of the United States.

Well, sometimes there's an alert by some inner voice. Sometimes it's easier like when you find eloquent writing style from someone you wouldn't think of, fragments that don't quite fit together, references to non-existing images etc etc

I think the Space Race thread is valuable stuff though. Whilst Tubaman42 may not have the moral high ground here, I'd like to give him the chance to re-jig it into his own words. Or failing that, I'd like to use his 'research' and the thread it has inspired to have a go at this myself.
Let's not be too hard on him. He's only 15 and maybe this is the way kids in Berkshire are expected to do their homework?

As the entry has been hidden for breaking the House Rules, we don't need to wait the necessary two months do we?
