Hello Tubaman.

I like this account and with a bit of brushing up I think it can be good enough to get selected (unless someone's already written about The Space Race - I didn't check - did you?).

One thing that seems to be amiss is the jump to Apollo 11. Was there Apollo 1? When was it; what was it; wasn't it very significant?

What do you reckon?

Since this is an entry that is close to my heart (for some unknown reason as I have no knowledge of it at all), I would like to see you consider the following ways that, in my opinion would make your entry better.

Presentation. Hard, and seemingly unfair life rule. You don’t get a second chance at a first impression (Ma Trout, c. 1988). Try to use the GuideML to put in some headers and subheaders and paragraphs, etc. If your entry is more readable, more people will take time to read it and give advice.

I think your entry is solid, but is maybe too brief on some of the key issues in a very significant chain of events in human history (from the perspective that humanity has managed for the first time to escape from the bonds of Earth). To improve this, I would try to include a fairly detailed timeline of ALL the significant events, e.g.,

April 12, 1961: Yuri Gagarin’s one-orbit flight lasted 108 minutes.

January 27, 1967: U.S. astronauts; Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee were killed in a fire on the launch-pad. After the disaster, the mission was officially designated Apollo 1.

March 18, 1965: The first ‘space-walk’ was by a Russian, ??? Leonov.

March 23, 1965: Five days later, Amercans Grisson and Young demonstrated pilot-manoeuverability of a space craft for the first time.

Date? 1968: US Apollo 8 orbitted the Earth ten times

Date?: 1969: Crewed Russian ships Soyuz 4 and Soyuz 5 linked up in space.

Etc.

I realise that each event, e.g., Apollo 1, etc will deserve its own full guide-entry, but feel that they should be mentioned-in-passing here, to be linked later.

I hope you will consider my opinion favourably. I really think that The Space Race, for all its cynics, was a superlative achievement in human history, and it deserves red carpet treatment in this Guide, and this Entry could be the mother of a whole litter of more detailed space-race related entries.

I think you have a good point there Dr T. Some content about the earlier Apollo missions, including those which were ground-based Apollos (one of which was, I believe, the first to incur fatalities in the American space programme), and the history-making Apollo 8 mission in which humans travelled out of sight of the earth for the first time, is necessary. I'd add that the entry skips very lightly over the major milestones of the first humans in space, giving them little more than a passing mention. I also think that some information about the inception of NASA is crucial to an entry about the space race.

Having said that, it *is* an excellent entry, and although I too have not checked to see if there is already an Edited Entry covering this subject, I believe this one has a spot booked on the front page at some point in the not too distant future

I think we should not forget that this is already quite a lenghty entry, and with all the extra information we're suggesting Tubaman include, this could almost expand to become a University Project.

Yes, except you did your properly, I went offline, had some libation, typed it up, then cut and paste in complete with apersands, hashes, and 4-figure codings. Not for the first time. What a spanner.

I don't think it's accurate to call any part of the Apollo 8 trajectory 'deep space' - I guess 'deep space' would be outside the Solar System. Mentioning those now famous photographs is something worthwhile though, perhaps you could think of another way of saying it.

I think it would be good to lose the sentence "In this time many other events happened, but none of them were really big enough to focus on." both because it's superfluous, and because you have actually focused on at least one of them - Yuri Gagarin. In fact, that whole paragraph could make a substantial contribution to the entry if re-named something like 'Putting the first humans into space', as that was such a crucial step in the race to put someone on the Moon. Perhaps you could also try putting the notable events into an bulleted list - <./>GuideML-UL</.> will show you how to do that.

I've had a quick skim through this and I have a couple of comments.

I think the comments about the difference just being about democracy and communism is a bit simplistic. In the name of democracy, the US has done some pretty undemocratic things to other countries. It was mostly about power and influence and expansionism.

You have a header 'The end of the space race' - how can you be sure?

You also point up to a link that doesn't exist (yet?).

The End of the Space Race to date doesnt really sound rite.

I think it is the end of the space race because it was between USA and the Soviet Union
And when the soviet union collapsed tht meant no more race cos there was noone to race against ne more.
Shme tho space travel is the future and we aint explorin it.
