My advice about being away to college on major personal events is having the support of new friends, or going out and treating your to something special.
This is my 2nd year at a univeristy, which is little over 300 miles from home, so I've now spent 2 birthdays from my friends & family. It was defiantly a difficult experience. My roommates and a few new friends of mine is what helped me get through these special days by taking me out to dinner and a movie. I had a good enough time so I didn't sulk about being away from home so much.

Don't forget the other half of the equation. Our (only) daughter was away on her birthday and we didn't quite know what to do. Visiting her would have cramped her individual celebrations but it didn't feel right to celebrate here without her.

Hmm I guess it depends on the child. I have always preferred to see my family on the day in question and to see my friends on the nearest Friday to the day itself. That way I can spend the weekend recovering.
