So many bottles, so little time! I prefer my whisky neat, no water, no ginger, and definately no lemonade! Many people like the dark, smoky malts, but I prefer the lighter ones. Costs mean that I generally have cheaper blended scotch, however. Any thing, as long as it's not Teachers, which to me tastes like tea.

Ahhhhhhh....whisky.....whisky.....whisky !!......light...dark....smoky...firey....whatever.....preferably single malt.......but even blanded....although I like blended with loads of ice and drunk quickly so the ice doesn't have time to melt !!!!!!!!

Kepp the bottle in the fridge, man, that way it's cold and doesn't get watered down!

Would you chill cognac or a good red wine? I wouldn't 'cause it ruins the flavour. But then perhaps I'm just an incurable snob.

Hi, Feste! No, you're not an incurable snob, you just like warm drinks. I only chill it in the summer, such as it is. I don't drink Cognac, just cheap brandy. Not much for wine, either. People have got different tastes, in everything.

The only thing that mixes well with whisky is Drambuie.

I have to agree that I think a Rusty Nail is probably the best drink on the planet.

I'm not a lover of either, but I agree with you, If you are REALLY a whiskey (or wiskey) lover you drink straight up. If not you are just trying to be macho. If you have to mix it drink snowballs or pink ladies. Maybe thats a little to unfair, I'll allow rocks, but anything else consitutes you should be drinking something else.
Rake people that say vodka is it. I'm sorry, I've been in the booze business for years, vodka is popular only because it has no overpowering taste, i.e. no taste. BUT It does have a taste and smell, that of alcohol, nothing else, just alcohol.
All alcoholics make this mistake, vodka has no taste, so I can drink it and nobody will know. WRONG, you smell of alcohol, trust me I have worked in Off Licenses, and Restaurants, you can smell it.
That aside my recipe for this evening is:- 1 Oz gin, 1/2 Oz cherry brandy, 1/2 Oz creme de cassis, alittle lemon & lime bar mix, and a splash of triple sec, shake and pour, and enjoy. And yes, you will smell of alcohol afterwards.
90% of women I have ever met swear by vodka, because it ahs no taste, it does not bite like whiskey, cognac, or even gin, and once mixed its hidden (that is till you throw up, because you just ingested as much alcohlo as the person next to you). I rest my case.

Yep, finding your way found the guide can be a little obscure, to say the least... Roughly translated means I don't have a clue.

The following are 2 cocktails/drinks I consider to be fairly numbing:

The first not stricly a cocktail but a definate mind devastator (at least drunk in the quantities I drink it). I tend to find that the drunkeness tends to creep up on you then suddenly just poleaxes you out of no-where and suddenly you're talking rubbish and walking funny..

The Red Devil, (possible known by other names...)
1 Pint of Lager (Preferably Fosters) from which is drunk enough to allow the following:
1 shot of pernod and black current (preferably 2 shots of pernod..)

Optional - substitute lager for a cider/lager mix


The second known as the ramraider can be seen served to the unfortunates at the Gloucester(Brighton) who really want to have an aching head for the next couple of days...

The Ramraider
1 part Jack Daniels
1 part Baileys
1 part Ammaretto
1 part Jagermeister

To be drunk through a straw quickly...
I usually find the first unsettles the stomach after having drunk a couple of pints of lager, but followed quickly by a second, the drink has the wonderful restorative powers of settling the stomach again.
3 or 4 is enough to be waking up on the curb wondering why you're only a couple of feet from your door.

Currently you can post to collective entries like this by simply posting the recipe to a conversation related to the alcohol table (create a new one if you like).

I'm trawling them (like I am now) and compiling the definitive entry. It's interesting reading...

The point everyone has neglected here is the infinite variety of whiskies.

I may be moved to more research on this subject, but having spent over 50 years researching this topic, I have collected a great deal of data as it is.

My conclusion: Canadian whiskey! Crown Royal [created 'specially for the royal visit in 19...mumble, mumble, something or other...] affectionately termed 'Purple Bag' by it's stalwart supporters.

Ahhhhhhh...sippin' whiskey at it's finest. Room temperature, on ice [for those warm summer days], or maybe, possibly, with the tiniest bit of water [for the faint of heart].

BUT, NEVER, NEVER, N E V E R! put ANYTHING else in your Crown Royal. No colas, no yucky fizzy sweetened beverages of ANY kind. It is NOT TRUE that Canada Dry Ginger Ale may be added to Crown Royal. You may, however select an inferior blended canadian whiskey to add gingerale to, but just don't tell me about it.

I have heard that soda [that is the plain, fizzy, unsweetened kind] may be added to whiskey. While I am suspicious of this, it may require more research, and a researcher needs to keep an open mind. It may be, that this is permitted with scotch whiskey, but that is not my area of expertise.

More to follow on other kinds of whiskey...please jump in if you specialize in any of the following: Scotch, bourbon, American sippin' whiskeys.

Hi there! Sorry, I thought I mentioned the various Malts in my first bit. But you are right, I entirely forgot about Canada and the USA...
Just for the record, never tried any Canadian whiskey. Have tried some American, though. I like Jack Daniels, but it's expensive over here. Tried some Bourbon once, don't know the brand, but didn't like it much. Southern Comfort is too sweet for me. (Odd that Drambuie isn't.) I've seen some Canadian whiskey on the shelves, so I had better try a little research myself. Oh, I was drinking The Famous Grouse last night. Very nice, but I'm sure it's changed from a few years ago.

I was only trying to dust and straighten the clutter a bit. Thought separate conversations about Scotch, bourbon, etc. might allow us to truely expand on our especial friends....

As far as Southern Comfort is concerned, there is only one thing it is good for, and that is softening up those 'girl parties' [like wedding showers and teas]. what you do is mix equal parts of SC and cranberry juice -I believe this qualifies the mixture to be called a Scarlett O'Hara.

You then serve it as 'punch' from a large bowl into little cups, garnished with those nasty red cherries. After one or two of these no one wants to play those intolerable party games any more, and after a couple more everyone quits gossiping and saying nasty things about each other [mainly because their tongues quit working properly], and sometimes I even have a good time at the ghastly affair.

And the reason you like Drambuie and dont like Southern Comfort is because Drambuie is made from a respectable Scotch whiskey. Gods only know where Southern Comfort comes from...

I have drunk many whiskeys from many lands, and concluded that scottish single malts deserve to have another name, for they highly outclass the rest.
that said, i can tell you why southern comfort is so foul...it was born in the lands which gave us moonshine
