You're from Pennsylvania? I'm from Long Island, New York! That's close-ish. Welcome! My name is Shea, and I am an Assistant Community Editor. We're a group of volunteers that wander about welcoming and helping new Researchers. If you want to ask me a question, or need help with anything, just hit the "Reply" button and leave a message, I'll pop back in and help you in any way I can!
If you're interested, I made a page with a list of links that you might like to check out. It's at A534953
If you ever want to talk to a Researcher, just click on their name. That will take you to their Personal Space, and you can leave them a message there (like I'm doing now!) by clicking on the 'Discuss this Entry' button.
Most importantly, have fun! You might find yourself meeting some great new friends! I know I have!

Hey Shea! Thanks for stopping by. I really appreciate it. That list of links looks (ouh tongue-twister)...as I was saying, it looks great. The whole GuideML will confuse the heck out of me and will probably take me awhile to get the hang of it. It looks daunting. And I do hope I meet some friends. Always good that.
Thanks again,
Fridgey

My pleasure!
A good way to learn GuideML is to sneak a peek at other people's pages! If you take the url of any Researcher's page, and replace the "U" in the name (for example, mine is: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/U63974 ) and replace it with the words: testuserpage (for example, mine is: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/classic/testuserpage63974 ) you can see exactly what their GuideML looks like. I'll admit I've done quite a bit of copy and paste work in my time!

Oops ... hi emmily! I was so busy trying to remember that silly testuserpage thing, I overlapped your post!

Arrr. Ya know, I have absolutely no idea where to start messing around with this thing. It's enormous and everyone already seems to belong to some group or something like that. Any suggestions on where to start exploring or reading or joining or something along those lines? I'd really appreciate any pointings in any direction whatsoever.

*waves* at Shea..hi Shea..
hi LurkingFride..difficult question to answer..depends what interests or hobbies you have..you could try typing interest or hobby into search engine..or..'ask the h2g2 communinty'..is a busy place..you might like to try..click front page..then on front page..bottom right hand corner..under 5 bussiest conversations..if you find a conversation thread..where you have something to say..just click reply..&..butt in....no need to be shy here..though..look top right hand of page..if there are blue dots..those dots represent pages..there maybe more posts than just the 1st page..or you could try <./>info</.> go down the page..til u come to most recent conversations..same thing..just butt in..everyone here is very friendly..if you mention your a newbie..they'll be extra nice & helpful....good luck..if you still need help..just ask..either me or shea..will be happy to help..

This place *is* huge! I've been here for 2 1/2 years, and I'm always finding new people, and new places to visit! emmily had some good ideas. Even if you don't find a group with your particular hobbies, there are plenty of *ahem* less serious groups about. For instance, I'm a Thingite A516647, a Princess of Balwyniti A446078, a Muse A420661, and a Keeper A441596, among other things! All you have to do is ask to join at any of these places, and then hang around and have fun! There are lots of groups like this, and all you have to do is post. Everyone's happy to meet new friends.
Another place you might want to check out is Abi's Community Column at A766901. She lists her current favorite entries, and conversations, and it changes often, so you always have new places to visit.
Or you could click on a Researcher's name. It will take you to their Personal Space. Researcher's always seem to be happy to post the groups they belong to, with links! You might find something that interests you just by wandering around in that way.
Another cool thing to try is to head for the h2g2 home page. There is a link there called "Infinite Improbablity Drive". This randomly takes you to a different Entry every time you click on it!
I've made some wonderful friends here, and even met my future husband! So it's a great way to meet people. Just post, you'll be glad you did.

Hey, thanks yet again. Sorry to hear about your forced leaving of this thread, emmily. Although...you'll probably not see this message. Anyway, I managed to figure out the thread idea pretty quickly. I'd already set off and left a few messages here and there by the time of these messages. And no Shea, you didn't ramble to long, I really appreciate any and all the advice you give me. Hope I don't sound to sappy thanking you a lot...that's just me. :D

Not a problem, LF (may I call you LF?). It's just nice to have a reply to one of my greetings. Sometimes the people I greet don't answer back, which is a pity, because I've made friends that way! Anything you want to ask, ask.
You're very welcome! ?

LurkingFridge Posted Jun 19, 2002
Course you can call me LF. It seems nearly every person I talk to online has their own variation. 'Lurkin', 'Fridgey', 'Fridgey Baby'; so yeah, 'LF' is juuuussssttt fine. I'm sure I'll come up with some other questions sooner or later as I'm sure to be puzzled by something.
