Hi, ViveAnn,
You do like sweeping statements and generalisations don't you
I am sure Canada and the UK, my home, have the same sort of people, but just as many laid back, "happy with what they've got" people too, the same as the US.
I wouldn't want to get in to an argument here, but much as I love some Canadians, and your beautiful country, you do some things that people in other parts of the world think are very wrong.
Some of what you say is true, but it seems to me you can be as abrasive and impatient as any American I have ever met
I look forward to other comments, folks

Living in America, I've found it to be much more enjoyable to be a patient person. The patient people have so much to do for fun.
For instance, if the person behind you wants to drive at 80 miles an hour, there's nothing wrong with a steady fifty-five, especially when the oncoming traffic prevents passing.
If you time it out right, they never have the chance to pass you!
I've never seen so many frustrated people.

Penny, you are evil!
Nah, seriously folks- it isn't that anyone's pushing me harder than I'm pushing myself. Truth be told, I want to get into grad school, have a full ride, and do ground-breaking research while I'm there! And I don't think I really have to worry about a) getting in or b) getting an assistantship, because I've got good grades and scientific research experience. It's just that Mom was an education major, and when she went for her masters, she did a distance learning program that she had to pay for with no help from anyone. No teaching assistantships, no research assistantships, nothing. She honestly thinks this fellowship is the best thing I'm going to get, and I made a huge mistake by waiting this long to apply for it! Truth be told, I wish I would have got around to it sooner, but the amount of busting my butt to get this other project done didn't leave for a lot of time to write application essays!
On the other hand, assuming everything at my school, the schools I've applied to, and the US Postal Service are all working correctly, I'll get some sort of help, hands down!
Oh, and PS- please no slanging matches in my journal!

Or, as the more enlightened among us say...A gramme of prevention is better than a kilogramme of cure.

Oh, and incidentally, all my fellowship and grad school applications are set. I was a little worried this afternoon about one of my letters getting in, because the guy was hit by a hacker before he could send it. But he faxed a hard copy, so everything's OK!

Here now, what's this about Americans not understanding SI units?
I just bought myself a clock that measures time in Radians, for Pete's sake.
Oh, yeah. Definitely not revealing that I'm a nerd whenever I show that to people. Not me, not at all....

Well today I was walking around Uni wearing a Sun Microsystems polo shirt, and I'm doing nurse training. A geek, moi?
