Gnomon - time to move on

How does this fit in with A27, the second entry in the Guide, where you say "We don't care what you say, as long as you say it with elan." ?

What doesn't fit with that? Just because the editorial priorities of the site differ now from then doesn't mean that we didn't have an edited guide then. The implication that you should 'say it with elan' surely implies a quality threshold, which was the whole point of the edited guide. The definition of quality has moved, as the guide has grown. And, for the record, I wasn't particularly happy with most of the original edited entries, but we had literally no time to do much about them except fix the spelling, grammar and punctuation (the bulk of which work was done by Tim, the technical lead on Starship Titanic, and Executive Producer of h2g2).

I've just posted on Pet Shops - A4717 to say I'll be doing a complete re-write of that Entry. I won't be using any of the original contents, do I still have to credit the Old Writing Team on the Entry? smiley - erm

I would say no. If you're not using any of their content, why credit them? Besides, I think that was what was agreed on the Teflon entry currently in PR.

With rewrites, we generally ask people to credit the authors of the original entries if the original was fairly substantial in the first place; it doesn't seem fair for someone to bypass the rules of no duplication just to get their entry in place of another existing entry.

But in the case of these 'Mostly Harmless' entries, the point is to get them replaced, so go for it! smiley - biggrin

Well I just read the whole thread, went back to the begining to check the Mostly Harmless personal space to see what articles were up for grabs. There are no articles in that personal space, so how am I meant to find the list of articles to be improved upon?

On the mostly harmless writing team there are no entries. If we are meant to trawl through each of the individuals mentioned that seems very impolite to me. Have they all left, are they happy to have their entries trawled through? What if one was picked which was not a mostly harmless entry? Can we guarentee that all entries on these peoples personal spaces are mostly harmless entries?

Still not interested in the answers really, I was happy to trawl through the mostly harmless writing teams entries, but I will not trawl through the other peoples. To my mind if there are mostly harmless entries to re-write they should be in the mostly harmless entry list, which is in fact empty of all entries.

Well done at finding that, when I click on the mostly harmless personal space there are no entries it is completely empty, so I have no idea how we are meant to find the entries.

Anyway don't worry TiT, I don't do edited guide, so its not my thing anyway. I was just trying to point out that when you click on the personal space which is provided as the link on the very first conversation, there are no entries there. So I was just pointing out how are people suppoed to find them if the one entry provided had no entries on it.

I can't explain this all again in another way, so I shall leave it now. Its very tiring trying to explain the same thing two or three times.

Gnomon - time to move on

It's entries belong to the Old Writing Team you should be looking for, Kaz, not ones by the Mostly Harmless account. Their number is U6292.

But please note that most of these are being re-written at the moment by Mikey's Band of Guide Updaters.

It would have been useful to have that link at the begining just to help other people.

I have a question and this thread seemed the right place. A friend of mine (no names, no packdrill, it's all at the idea stage still) was thinking about writing an entry on sauerkraut and found that there is one in the EG: A164558.

That seems to me a 'Mostly Harmless' type entry, but hasn't been classified as such: author last posted five years ago.

Now - does that have to go through the Update Forum, given that researcher X would be starting from scratch with a brand new entry (and the current one would hardly provide the bare bones for it)?

Or - does it have to be reclassified as 'Mostly Harmless' first?

I'm just asking in light of what was said earlier about entirely replacing these kinds of entry.

It has to go through the Update Forum simply because it removes a lot of the admin by doing it that way. Even if it's a full new entry. However, we can still publish the new entry on the Front Page too, so your friend won't miss out.

Look forward to seeing it. smiley - smiley
