A superfluous smiley - ok snuck into the URL.

So, what happens on the garden side? Do the pipes just lead out to soaker hoses or something like that, or does it go to some type of reserve. I don't imagine one person mans the garden hose while someone else is showering. OK, I did just imagine that.

Anyway, I live in a garage apartment and it would be very easy for me to do something like this as I don't have to feed water up out of a basement by pump or anything like that. I'm thinking I might just run a pipe out a wall and let it feed a barrel. I might also collect rainwater from my roof into it as well. I would have a dolly truck attached to the barrel so I could wheel it out to a particular tree or my parents (who's property I share) could wheel it out to their vegetable garden.

smiley - ok

Generally speaking, you want to use fresh water on vegetables. You can use grey water on your folks' fruit and nut trees, as well as ornamental plants.

Also, you don't want too much soap/detergent on plants. We use the rinse water only from the washer.

What an ingenious way of using grey water during desperate times. I had no idea such a technique existed - I can't remember ever experiencing a drought of even half as severe magnitude as you are (just a few weeks later than this last spring, we had four feet too much of it in our building).

Thanks for sharing. That was very interesting to read, and I went and did more "research" online during my lunch break. Fascinating, and brilliant. I'm just sorry it's necessary, hope the Rex Block lets up soon.

No, we are on the second floor so we were only mildly inconvenienced. It took about 24 hours for the water to recede enough to go downstairs or outside, and the gas was cutoff for about 48 hours. That's nothing.

I am very concerned about the threat of wildfires out there by you, though. There isn't such a thing as a minor wildfire. I wish we could send you some rain!

Baron Grim

Reusing grey water makes sense even in less arid areas. It's just a waste to pour treated water on trees and lawns while pouring grey water down the drain.

Speaking of which, rain barrels used to be common. Would you believe there are certain cities and states that ban their use? The justification is that you are somehow impeding the flow of water to farmers. Which means that the water that falls on your property belongs to other property owners more than you. Silly laws that are being rescinded in many of those areas now.

Whether your used water goes to city sewers or a septic tank, Baron Grim is right.

If your grey water is going to city sewers, it likely will be treated somewhere along the line, which costs money. Here in California water is used and reused numerous times. smiley - cheers

If your grey water is going to a septic tank, that too has costs. Septic tanks last longer the less you use them, so it makes sense to reuse water.

Chance are your water had to be pumped somewhere along the line and that means a pump had to be powered, so you are saving diesel or electricity if you can use grey water.

However, please don't think that means you have to wear a Dune-style suit or anything. Visitors to Casa Nerd are not made to wander around thirsty. smiley - alesmiley - winekeysmiley - redwinesmiley - pggbsmiley - cidersmiley - bubblysmiley - oj<smiley - stiffdrinksmiley - coffeesmiley - cappuccinosmiley - teasmiley - pggbsmiley - cheerssmiley - cheerssmiley - cheerssmiley - chocsmiley - stout
