Well, I've finally done it. I've changed my name by deed poll. Now the people at work can call me by the same name that the people outside work call me, and I won't be living a 'double life' any more.
I've had my work e-mail changed and publicised it. Now I'll have to tell my bank, otherwise my salary will be paid to a person who doesn't legally exist yet.
That was one of the things that held me back from doing it. The list of people to tell is amazingly long. Maybe I'll get round to doing an h2g2 entry about it.

Not to Zarquon's Singing Fish!, Jodan! - although it's a thought!
TiT, - I've changed my first name. A couple of people at work thought I'd got married when I said I've changed my name, but I haven't.
Interesting that I was just worrying about having to tell the bank and all that, and someone called me at home from the bank a few minutes ago, I explained that I had changed my name and she said she would send me a list of my direct debits and standing orders so that these can be changed too. Now that's real serendipity!

"I have read the other journal entry 'A rose by any other name'
< <./>F75037?thread=411018</.> > where you also wrote about this 'deed poll'.
I can hardly find clear information (without lots of required knowledge) about this on the WEB. I think an entry could clear up the actual status of this name change.
I could figure it out for myself but I think an entry would clear it out for lots of people.
Apparently the bank personel has good instructions for these situations. How is your work administration handling things?
This sounds to me like my consistent problem with forms: I always have lack of space on one field and nothing to add on required ones.

Hi,
You can change your name any time you like provided it is not for fraudulent purposes. In the current climate it might be advisable to change everything, so there can be no confusion. Have you made a will? If so, perhaps it would be wise to alter that too
My son changed his surname when he was eighteen, to my second married name. It saved him explaining to nosy people why he had a different surname from his Mum. It also meant we were more like one family. He hasn't regretted it to my knowledge.
I hope your new name brings you happiness and
Websailor
PS. to Changing you name by Deed Poll simply means that it is done officially.

Thanks, Websailor !
I have made a will, and I hadn't thought of that in the list of people I need to notify.
Hopefully, there shouldn't be too much confusion, as I've kept my birth name as a middle name. I haven't yet told my parents - that's going to be the most difficult of all. They know that I have a differnt name that I use. Roy calls me this and it was really interesting when he met my parents - they called me one thing and he called me another. Do you know, I'm not that certain that they noticed! Mind you, my answerphone gives my new name and has done for quite a while, so I suppose it won't be a complete shock.
TiT , As Websailor has said, as I've made it legal, there shouldn't be any difficulty once I've notified everyone. It's a bit like getting married, although I don't think I'll be doing that for quite a while yet.

Hi former ZSF!
I'm a bit confused, I fear. Are we too call you Deed Poll, now?
G'night, Deed.
[I kinda like it]

No the ZSF! bit is still current, Fords!
To put it into context, my former name is single syllable and old-fashioned. A bit like Doris (OK that's got two syllables, but you get the picture). My new name has four syllables and two hyphens. It looks 'foreign' as it's a Sufi name - one given to me by my guide. My employer couldn't manage the hyphens in my e-mail address, so has given me apostrophes. Not quite the same. I've said that if people can't handle it, they can call me 'K'.

One problems I am having, though is that for some reason, my incoming work e-mail has been diverted to my home e-mail rather than my work one. I'll have to get that sorted out today. I'm going on holiday to see my parents on the Isle of Wight soon as I don't want to come back to a flood of work related stuff!

Oh, the incompetence of the computer person at work. He's put a forwarding message and quoted my new e-mail address incorrectly. And the message isn't even in good English. They'll think I wrote it! And I'm now on holiday, and they didn't get back to me all afternoon, knowing full well I was going on holiday.

Congratulations on your name change !
The name that people call me 'on the outside' is not my birth name either - my 'new' name kind of found me about 11 years ago and I decided that I would use that as I was never comfortable with the one given to me.
It's very empowering to choose your own name - many traditions believe in the power of names.
Hmm, realised that I used the word 'name' far too much there.

Sorry.

I found the least effort and embarrassement came by just dropping my old contacts, mobile phone contract, gym membership, library ticket, and getting new ones.
The one I forgot about was the tax office, what about little s school? because won't they have you on record.
Oooh and if you have any shares through whatever reason you have to write to the companys registrar.
It's actually easier to do it because of my situation due to the fact that in most organisations there is a specific person, usually a middle manager who 'deals with people like you'. I was mildly peeved to find the GMC had one though.. I mean I have to be the first..

Thank you, LSF! (well, it is morning!) Yes, it is empowering, I did an I Ching about it yesterday - I've not done one about anything in many months and I got 27 changing to 2. Jaws (nourishing) changing on the first and sixth lines to Field - the most yin (feminine) symbol of all. Interesting that the name means 'angel of womanhood' which i thought was awesome in the Biblical sense when I was given it - hence I didn't use it for three years.
Z - you might be right there. I spoke to a very old and dear friend yesterday on the phone and she more or less said that she would continue to call me by my old name - she's known me about 30 years, so it's going to be very difficult for her. Interestingly, my boss and her boss started to call me the new name instantly. And at work, even I have to think about how I answer the phone as the context has power in and of itself. At home, I've been the new name to everyone except my parents and my older friends for some time.
AR1 - of course you've known my name for ages. I'm off to the Isle of Wight this week to see mum and dad. If you're around the following week, maybe we can come to visit you? I'll give you a call later.
Maybe I should declare now what the name is - I'll still be ZSF! on-site, though. It's Khair-un-Nisa - pronounced 'kareneesa' - short 'a', long 'i'. Pir Vilayat, who was the founder of my Sufi Order, has a daughter called Noor-un-Nisa - angel of light.

Thank you, LSF!
Interestingly, I did a Google search on it and there's a lovely story of a British General - 'General James Achilles Kirkpatrick fell in love with a fifteen-year old Muslim Princess, Khair un-Nisa, converted to Islam and married her.' and I also found out that Hazrat Inayat Khan had a second daughter called Khair-un-Nisa.
Just found this neat site:

- and had a look to see if I have a time twin - I don't! Not even close.
