Congratulations to the author on getting his entry approved. I saw what kind of trouble he went to, getting all that quoted material past the editors. The extensive paraphrasing looks like an acceptable solution to me.

Hmm, I don´t think I´ve ever heard of the guy before. But he does seem like a dead hero. However isn´t it rather interesting with the passage "Freedom of f*****g speech"? Kind of an oxymoron.

I feel privileged to have seen Bill Hicks live in 1992. Comedians come and go, and many of them amuse and entertain us, but I can't think of any that are remembered with the same kind of reverence as Bill Hicks. Congrats on the article - you've inspired me to join the h2g2 happy band!

But again, it seems like hypocracy to have censorship in an article about a guy who advocated freedom of speech.

H2G2 has had several arguments about free speech. Debates range from the "...These servers are private property and therefore we can make any restrictions we want..."

Then there's "...The BBC are a public service provider and therefore should not censor..."

There's also "...We need to protect children, so moderation is necessary on a public website..."

These arguments have been carried out all over H2G2, and I don't suggest we rehash them here. Instead, if you're interested, I suggest you search the Guide for the "Zaphodistas" and see where that takes you.

I have argued and do argue for Free Speech and all that entails (including my belief that people should identify themselves properly with their Free Speech, hence I'm using my real name). I reject your suggestion that I've been hypocritical in writing this article.

So...about this Bill Hicks guy. If you really haven't heard of him, then do yourself a favour and stick his name in a search engine. You will not regret it.

Great article on a great guy. There was a rather poignant and sad article in Loaded or FHM magazine which I read. It described how Bill was the only one who really knew about his illness and this went a long way to explain why he was so desperate to get his point of view across in his later years. His irrational behaviour during meetings concerned with a tv special (bear with me as I am writing all this from memory), was all down to his horrific cancer.

God rest you Mr Hicks.

I woudl just like to add to my salute of Mr Hicks. Didn't hear much of hist stuff but he made alot of sense. A sad loss.

Timothy Leary was into his psychedelic drugs in a big way, especially mushrooms and acid. Wrote a few books an that. Lived in this big house supposedly doing psychotherapy research, which is how he got his drugs.

Ken Kesey (wrote on flew over the cuckoos nest) and the merry pranksters went to visit him once and all hell broke loose. They were like the two big psychodelic groups in the 60's but they had very different ideas.

Dennis Leary however was comic in the same vein as Bill Hicks. He gets a mention in the entry somewhere.

Dennis Leary was to Bill Hicks what Eddie Murphy is to Richard Pryor.
