What foods to consume/avoid
It is never a good idea to eat while you are asleep, as foodal chokage can occur. If you find that you are sleepwalking to the fridge in the middle of the night (or the day, for that matter), then you should probably try some sort of restraining device while you are asleep. Handcuffs might be a good starting point.
Alternative remedies for insomnia
If you are having trouble sleeping, the easiest way to deal with the problem is to find a nice, solid wall and run into it as fast as you can. This may sound painful, but if you do it right, you won't feel a thing - you'll be 'asleep' before you hit the floor. You may want to stock up on painkillers beforehand, however, as when you 'wake up', you may have a sort head.

How to arrange the bedroom to promote good sleep
If using the above method, you just need to clear a path to the hardest wall and place something soft nearby, an airbed or matress for example.
If using conventional methods, away from any sources of heat (e.g. radiators) to avoid bottom cooking in the middle of the night, and away from sources of noise (e.g. windows, televisions, children) is a good idea.
It is also a good idea to have your bed on the floor, unless you have anti-gravity generaters installed in the room.
What exercises best encourage sleep and when to do them
The best exercise to encourage sleep is the repeated motion of the arm from the table to the mouth, using a glass of alcoholic beverage as the weight. The contents of the glass usually dictate the length of the exercise. Note that you must remember to open your mouth when the glass reaches it.

If those around you are making a noise (e.g. complaining they can't sleep), get some earplugs. Or try the above method using the wall.

Don't sleep on top of a carpet of nails.
Don't cover yourself in paint before sleeping.
Don't lie on the bed naked if it's a cold night. Conversely, don't hide under a mountain of blankets/think pyjamas if it's warm and humid.
