Tuck into this one....

Measured per pound (lb) what is the most valuable, naturally occurring, and edible, 'thing'?

Do NOT use Google or Wikipedia.
Or else you'll forfeit all points this round - I really mean it!
Books, The Guide and creative guessing are encouraged.

There are klaxons, naturally: so be bold - preferably interesting - but never obvious.

Bon appétit - I mean... good luck!

Every source I've found gives prices in $ so you might want to factor that into your calculations.

I was originally going to run with 'organism' until I realised that ruled out one or two possibilities so changed it to the even more nondescript 'thing.'

My immediate thoughts are caviar or truffles, but that is too obvious.

The next would be edible gold leaf, but too abstract.

I'll go for the coffee that has to pass through the gut of a civet to break it down before being made into coffee. It was sold in the store I worked (in August 2008, and sold out on the first day) for £50 a cup. I had to look back in old works magazine for the name - It was listed as a blend of Blue Mountain and Kopi Luwak coffee. Still get asked if it is still stocked.

Still seems unlikely though. smiley - sadface

Edible gold lead was my second guess.

Gold LEAF was my third guess.

Gold-lead, while I'm sure it exhibits many fine alloying properties, is probably not very edible.

Why so cautious? smiley - evilgrin

but okay bid your time if you must - play the long game, let Taff or hd compete to act as mine-sweeper the swoop in and sweep up the remaining positive points. Underneath that beard - I can see your mind, Gt. smiley - winkeye

I was going to wait - I'm still catching up on some kip after "happily violence" smiley - winkeye but once I think up the question and all the forfeits I gets all antsy to post it and get it out of my brain and into all of yours!

OK...some very old vintage wines have sold at silly prices.

I vaguely remember that one of them was dropped just afterwards.

I didn't include auctions. So this is the price per pound, by bulk purchase - what the value of a pound of the material substance would be.

So rare vintage wines not the answer.

By 'edible thing', are you implying that it's something that wasn't really intended for consumption?
