I'm not sure that the middle of the 18th century is correct. The words were sung to Louis XIV in 1686 (in French "Grand Dieu sauvez le roi, Grande Dieu vengez le roi" &c.) and the tune is attributed to Dr John Bull who was extant sixteenth/seventeeth centuries.

I suspect you're heading towards it's popularity during the 1745 Rebellion when it was sung in support of George II. The first known performance of words and music (as in the National Anthem we know today) was at the Drury Lane theatre in this year.

Leichtenstein has the same tune as God Save the King for her national anthem but the words are different. I know this because when England played Leichtenstein at football, it was memorable for being one of the few occassions when the English fans didn't boo the opposing team's national anthem!

pebblederook-The old guy wearing surfer beads- what does he think he looks like?

It must have been Clayton Moore because he made his reputation as the lone arranger.

Boom boom.

Was it Thomas Arne or am I thinking of Rule Britannia? Somebody Carey is often credited with having written God Save the King but that has more to do with the claims of his son than any factual evidence.

Geggs

Just out of interest, it was mentioned on the news on the 31st of October at a 2500th anniversery marathon was being held in Greece.

Which rather suggests that is the day, rather than 28th September.
