My last shot John Norden is a map maker from the period he and Speed were the best of the time (in my opnion). He was the author of a guide to Speeds maps.

There are many (10+) good map makers and engravers/printers fron the era its tough to pick the best.smiley - cheers

Not John Norden Bob.

Biggest clue I can give has already been done.

He is credited with the invention of the Cross Staff and the Quadrant....

Feisor - -0- Generix I made it back - sortof ...

Didn't Isaac Newton have a dispute with astronomer John Hadley over who invented the quadrant?

Sorry ... a bit vague about it all - sort of half remembered stuff.

And I think that there was also an American inventor involved as well ...

Our man is earlier than Newton or Hadley, Feisor.

Right folks.

Here it is.

The man we were looking for is one Edmund Gunter, who in 1607 standardised the lengths of the rod, the pole, and the perch to 16'6''.

The effect of this was to standardise the length of the chain to 4 rods, poles or perches (22 yd.), the furlong to 10 chains (220 yd.) and the mile (8 furlongs)

And that is it!
