Was it payment that Lawyers took?
I.e. you get represented by a Lawyer you pay them the produce from one furlong for one year?
No, don't think it is...
Hmmm...
How far away a Lawyer needs to be before you can comfortably turn your back on them?

>>There is something of a legal bent to the furlong!<< - gt @15.
OK.
Legal: It was standardised (in the manner of British Standards) at some point.
Bent: into a new \shape/* from the older accepted usage.
By whom? oh, let's say 'enery VIII (capital apostrophe there)
* Will someone please tell me what the h2g2 Standard is, instead of ' ' or " " ?

furlong comes from furrow length
furlong is 1/8th of a mile
was this the legal length of an individuals strip in the strip farming method
and as before an acre is a furlong X a chain was each strip a chain wide and could you get 8 furrows on a chain wide strip field
and was a furlong how far a horse/ox could pull a plow in a set time
singing a chorus of a song maybe???
tying together furlong, chain, acre and mile

furlong is 40 rods long A rod is supposed to be the length of an ox whip or goad. and a 17c pike (the spear like weapon) was on average 16.5 long
furlong is 1/8th of a mile which is also Roman based measurement called a Stade which seems to have been passed on to Anglo Saxon England. A stadium (ROMAN) was a stade long hence the name probably???
(was this the legal length of an individuals strip in the strip farming method) sort of it is the maximim length a healthy Ox can pull a plough before he needs a breather. This was provided by turning the plough takes about 5 to 10 mins to line it up that's why old fields are strips as it is hard work turning a plough.
An acer is an area that the above man and Ox can plough in a day.

Bit of a repeat, but still Some points!
Furlong 1/8 mile. Already known.
Acre = furlong x chain. Known as above.
Furlong was how far a horse/ox could pull plough in set time. Close, +1
