I think there was one Pope in Constantinople and the other in Avignon.
The Avignon one was considered the real pope.... I think... If I'm remembering what Mary Gentle said in one of her afterwords correctly...

There's actually been a few times in history when there were multiple popes.
Luckily they all went to hell, as they tended to excommunicate each other. Not that that stopped them.

Right people.
Argon0 - geggs has the right idea in Post 39!
hd Post 40 - Didn't know that! Have a DGI +1!
Oh, and not a treaty beginning with 'V'!!
This one began with 'L'
It was pre-1939......
On the 'Addled Parliament'.........Apart from what bob suggested, they did not do something else that led to dissolution......
That is the last of the clues!!

Aha! Began with an L was a big help. The Lateran Agreement was something to do with Mussolini and the then pope. Is that the one? Don't know the year though, somewhere between 1922 (when Mussolini came to power) and 1939.

Well, according to "Europe: A history" it was 1929, between Mussolini & Pope Pius Xi.

Was the Addled Parliament connected with the effort to open the doors to the Scottish Protestants, the Romish Catholic and the Judean faiths after the establishment of the Church of England had become so secure before the Stuarts inherited through Mary Tudor?

Addled parliament - did they not pass a bill the King wanted passed? Maybe a bill to give him more money? Or to go to War with Spain, again, or maybe France?
