Is he really? I read his first two books when they were new, but gave them away and have never re-read them. The only one I've got is Dancing on the Grave and it's a long time since I read that and while I was typing that the obvious answer that came to me is:
After they die.

Merely an aside from post 6.
I think it's the second Science of Discworld book which talks about the rituals all cultures have as part of their "make a human being" kit. Most happen around puberty. Then they talk about Jewish circumcision, saying it's a ritual which has drifted, and was probably initially a puberty/coming-of-age/manhood ritual, but it now tests the fathers, not the sons.

Correct. +3
It doesn't matter what age you are, it is a funerary rite to be guaranteed passage to the afterlife.
I'll retrospectively award Taff some DGIs for his 'deathbed' post as he was so close, but I read that one several times and it made no mention of them being dead but just about to.

I think they were a few too many eyes down to stop and gaze up to spot the clue, TRiG

Actually I was taking it from someone quoting Barely, but it piqued my interest enough to go looking for his books on amazon, sadly they are all in private sellers hands and cost about £30.

Dea.. - call me Mrs B! Posted Feb 3, 2010
Just noticed I'm not on the official scoreboard yet, sure I posted on the 'add me' thread a while back but I'll go have a word with Bob. Sure this happened last year too, there are a few of us (Me & Deke especially) with similar names on here, I really must change my name a bit.
