I used to have a neighbour from the Sudan and he was circumcised when he was about 13.

He said that the boys would be gathered together and kept in a separate house where they were taught about sex and life and stuff - the circumcision was the culmination of coming of age and his entry into the community as a man.

He said that, as women forget the pain of childbirth so the boys remembered only the ceremony and not the pain . I'm not sure that I believed him.

Nigel Barley's book The Innocent Anthropologist tells of a tribe in Cameroon where circumcision involves stripping the skin from most of the penis, and is done to adult males. Just thought I'd share that, as it's nearly tea-time.
