pebblederook-The old guy wearing surfer beads- what does he think he looks like?

There were others far more deserving of reward but they took advantage and have stayed on and on and on. And after a war it was a little ironic.

Who, what am I talking about and why was it ironic.

Too far north, and not a religious group, and "they" are still there to this day.

Taff no points as you are nowhere near the answer, but you are correct that the Channel Islands are the only remnants of the Duchy of Normandy still loyal to the British Crown.

You are also correct that they were occupied by the Germans during WW2 however many Islanders will tell you that after the liberation they were immediately re occupied by the British!

Islanders might also query that they were the only part of Britain occupied during WW2 as they do not consider themselves either part of
the political entity the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, nor the geographic area known as the British Isles.

Charlie Hungerford and Jim Bergerac were characters in a TV series set in Jersey, and Jersey is famous for the Jersey Royal potato or "spud" and spuds bears a relationship (if you could call it that) to a part of the answer that is so tenuous that I wouldn't even mention it (as it might send you off on the wrong tack), if it wasn't for the six klaxons!

Nothing to do with Alannis Morisette's song, "Ironic", then?

Not Nortern Ireland and not religious in ANY sense other than the extremely contentious and vague usage of the term as "religious" in the particular context.

Correct!!! It is nothing to do with the song, although hopefully my use of the word is closer to correct usage than in that lyric.

Deek

Oooh… I remember something from the subject of a TV programme a couple of months ago.

During WW2, one of the far flung Scottish islands (maybe in the Faroes), was occupied by the British Army. They built an airstrip for use by RAF long range aircraft to protect convoys on this side of the ditch.

Many of the Army personnel stayed after the war and married local girls who were of Scandinavian origin, .

Not connected to the Faroes nor other Scottish Islands. Indeed you are straying too far North again.

And the Channel Islands are too far South.

Plenty of room to play in between. Aptly stylish.
