There was a car called Spitfire, it was an MG Sports car I think. Still not what I had in mind though.

Yeah it was a Triumph. Quite appropriate if it was named after the plane!
Think about the word Spitfire.

Not tonight. busy. Anyone else?
Something you'll find as an Elf - is that traffic on 'your thread' can wax and wane. One of the reasons elves get +2 (1 more than DGI Bonuses) is because monitoring and gently nurturing those in your snare can take time and some degree of dedication and so deserves to be elevated slightly above the lucky but rightist guess.
On the plus side being the one in charge is a lot of fun.

A I remember it, Mitchell really took umbrage at the name 'Spitfire' as I recall......
Didn't quite take his image or something......

For some reason I pictured you as Tom Hanks in that spitoon of stagnant bilge water: Da Vinci Code

Wasn't the Spitfire developed from a seaplane that was designed for racing (the name of it escapes me)?
qi-hello
drt Posted Oct 6, 2009
Don't know about that ekky' but it is not relevant, however Mitchell's opinion about the naming of his design is. Any ideas?

~ jwf ~ scribblo ergo sum Posted Oct 6, 2009
Oh, ok, if it`s not relevant or klaxonable then let me just say `Supermarine Swift`.
It came to mind but I wouldn`t bet my life on it being the name of the first prototype seaplanes because it may be what they called the aircraft-carrier-borne folding-wing version of the later Spitfires. But without a good google I cannot be sure.
And now I`m continuing to wonder about the earlier suggestion from Lil that `Seneca` was an airplane. Of course at the time I dismissed it because I figgered she was probably thinking of a `Cessna` but now I`m starting to wonder if maybe she was unto something.

I remember a couple of things now.
Clive has triggered memories of Supermarine and Schneider Trophy winning aircraft that Mitchell was involved in developing.........
Oh Yes!!! He thought that the name 'Spitfire' was silly!! (But a little better than 'Shrew' thjat someone suggested!!)

Yep you are all definitely getting there! Mitchell did not like the name, and his is the second quotation I am after. Seneca is the Roman chap and his is the other one.
Apologies for not getting back sooner - w*rk.
JWF no it is not relevant but it is interesting. I think you should have QI points. Still not sure about scoring protocols but it's plus six is'nt it?
I will try and get back tomorrow - w*rk allowing- with a recap and a further clue if needed. I am delighted that my first foray has been so much fun, and I've learned that really obscure is not the same as really interesting. Soory 'bout that

And if it is allowed, a bonus point to ekky and clive, because they seem to have given jwf the idea.
