My guess is an animal. Either one bred by humans, or one humans consider a pest, which loves the company of humans.
Why not take two klaxons on the chin - cattle or rats?

I'd go a bit further than Ben and say stars in our galaxy...
Although whether that's before or after they discovered our galaxy is something far bigger than they thought it was last week is anyone's guess.
