1982 found me in a position of half of each day as a work-shop supervisor, the other half with pen and multi-ply forms. (And micro-fiche) And a bucket of coffee at my elbow. 
I still don't know to this day what the actual supervisor was doing . ..

You're preaching to the choir.
That said, I have to admit that sometimes an activist supervisor creates enough distraction to disrupt actual work. If you know when *not* to poke your nose into things, you may be very effective indeed.
