Daffodils are coming up

I planted about 20 daffodils last Fall. The other day I went around to see if any were up yet. There was no sign of them. Today I looked again, and saw about half them up. The blossoms are probably a couple of weeks away, but at least I know some of them survived the Winter. Daffodils from previous years are up again, and seem to have multiplied.

Other plants that have survived the Winter are Columbine, wild geraniums, Shasta daisies, and Black eyed Susans.

Some of my potentillas are waking up, and some are still dormant. I'm hoping that I didn't kill some of them by planting them in places that were bad for them. smiley - sadface

The roses are all looking ready to roll.

The holly bushes seem to have survived, though I can't tell whether they're in good shape or not. If they start blooming in May, that will be a good sign.

The Hostas are mostly not showing life yet.

I have three sets of Labrador violets in my yard, but the layers of oak leaves on top of them will need to be raked away.

It could have been worse. If you had gotten two feet of snow, Frosty the snowman would be a horse.

I remember my first snowman.

It was a 2-legged snow man.

Then came a thaw, followed that night by a sharp freeze.

The snow man's head slid down between its knees where it refroze and looked like a bell.

I have seen daffodils in the public park and a solitary buttercup. Blossom has begin to appear on the trees in Thurrock except for my two trees in my back garden.

Gnomon - time to move on

Our first daffodils were up about mid February which was late. They were all destroyed by the March snow but a new lot came up within a few days of the snow thawing and we’ve have hundreds flowering for the last fortnight.

Hi.

This year I bought pots of daffodils and sank them, pots and all, into the ground. That way, they should be safe from burrowers. if they don't do well, I can toss them and plant new pots in their place. smiley - smiley

That is very clever. I think I will probably do that, too!

I keep more things inmplanters than I used to. The rabbits just destroy Echinacea and Rudbeckia if I don't. They even bite off iris leaves, though they don't eat them, smiley - cross

The advantage of a planter is that it makes the plant eight to twelve higher off the ground than it would have been. Rabbits are too lazy to climb more than is absolutely necessary.

I have been adding more trees and flowers to my garden this year. I have bought some wildflower seed bombs which I threw on to a prepared part of the lawn which I have cleared. I do not have any problems with rabbits but foxes digging up parts of my raised bed and planters. I have a device that emits a high pitched sound which does not seem to work as a good deterrent. I only started to get more foxes in my garden once I started to grow more plants. The foxes like digging up the flowers and have had a few that have disappeared. Any good ideas of an eco friendly fox deterrent.

Your foxes are probably digging for worms or grubs to eat.

You are most welcome. smiley - smiley

In my area we don't have many foxes, but skunks often dig for grubs.

Rev Nick - dead man walking (mostly)

Haven't had many skunks for over a decade. And even foxes are more rare. But dwarf bunnies are back last year and this year.
