Pierre de la Mer ~ sometimes slightly worried but never panicking ~ Posted Jan 10, 2017
The group I was with in LA was given a VIP tour through Universal Studios. I particularly remember the town hall square (bell tower included) from "Back To The Future". We were told it has been used in dozens of films and I always look out for it when seeing a Universal movie

Are you talking about grass burrs, Broelan?

No, although the cats used to come in from outside with loads of those in their fur. No, the stuff I came across is practically invisible in the grass, but if you step on it feels like about a thousand needles. Of course, my cousin who lived there neglected to warn me until I had tried walking on the grass because the sidewalk was too hot.

Sounds like sunbathing on the lawn isn't much fun.

"A man called Ove" is the only foreign-language films that's likely to get nominated. As soon as I found out that it was going to be released, I got a copy of the book and read it.
I may have been too hard on "Rogue One" in another thread. It's likely to get nominations in two or three technical categories.
I didn't like "Nocturnal Animals," even as I respected the acting and direction. The story is a downer. Then I found out that Jake Gyllenhaal won a BAFTA award for his acting in that film. Last year he was nominated for a SAG award for "Nightcrawler," but this did not translate into an Oscar nomination. This was his second BAFTA award; the first was for "Brokeback Mountain." He's been doing edgy films for at least five years -- "End of Watch," "Source Code," "Nightcrawler," etc. He trains like crazy for his roles. Imagine the mountain climbing he did for "Everest."

I meant that I had only *seen* one likely foreign-language nominee: "A man called Ove."

Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi, who won an Oscar in 2012, is this year nominated for his film The Salesman. But he won't come to the Oscars even if he should be allowed to enter the United States. And you can guess why ...
The people behind the Danish nominee "Land of Mine" are also considering boycotting the award show.

Is it because they have no use or the Oscars, or because of he President?
