Orlando
2001: A Space Odyssey
The Spanish Prisoner
The Professional
Dancer in the Dark
Brazil
Blade Runner
Gattaca
Being John Malkovich
Sophie's Choice
Schindler's List
Mississipi Burning
Alien
American Beauty
Run Lola Run
There are too many reasons to love these movies... whether it is Plimpton's performance in Orlando, the fantasic cinematography in 2001, Mamet's whirl of a screenplay, Luc Besson's wonderful direction, Björk's painful portrayal of Selma, the wonderfully futurisic settings and cultures of Gattaca, Blade Runenr and Brazil, not evening bringing up the thought provoking themes they all have, the oddball story of John Malkovich, the stark reality of Post-WWII portrayed in Sophie's Choice and Schindler's list, the bigotry and pained ethics of Mississipi Burning *what has four eyes and can't see?*, James Cameron's unique vision of Alien, and the grasping story lines of Run Lola Run and American Beauty... these are all just great films, for far too many reasons. They provide what movies should : a grasping, thoughtful story, fantastic imagery, poignant actors, great direction, and the total unwillingness to conform to Hollywood standards.

I would also have to nominate Boys Don't Cry. An incredibly powerful, moving film about gender and identity with a stunning performance in the central role from Hilary Swank.

How about The Exorcist? One of *the* classic horror films of all time. Over 25 years old and only recently removed from the banned list. Great stuff.

Schindler's list was an amazing film...it was so moving and well done...I cried at the end<cry...and I don't cry at films normally!!

MP's The Holy Grail was good, but I thought Life Of Brian was better "He's not the messiah, he's a very naughty boy", etc

My phone rings "Bridge on the River Kwai"'s Colonel Bogey tune at me.
Add The Third Man to the list - the first film I ever saw with Orson Welles in it, and he steals what is an incredible movie

Thank you Em... YES!
The Muppet Movie was brilliant!
I have also thought of 'Harvey', an old Jimmy Stewart flick where his best mate was a 7 1/2 foot tall invisible white rabbit called Harvey. Lovely stuff.

I have to say that, surprising as it sounds, "Fight Club" really moved me. It's not exactly a film to cry at but it contains some very observant social satire and very seductive irresponsibility (much like "A clockwork orange" which was also blashemisly ignored) that is truly terrifying. It's a film that makes you think. It makes you think and makes you fear. The world is not a nice place and it's too easy to find solace in violence.
I almost cried at "It's a wonderful life" but managed to stop because I was in the cinema with some friends (both male and female.) I did cry at Schindlers list but I was alone and I should be allowed considering that many of my relatives were killed in the Holocaust.
Saving Private Ryan was also quite touching but the hollow patriotism slightly damaged the effect of an otherwise harrowing movie. ("It's a letter for my dad...")
I have to say that I really enjoyed American Beauty and thought it deserved it's Oscars (esp. Kevin Spacey's) even though I do admit it was extremely overhyped.

FIGHT CLUB!..."the first rule of Fight Club is..."
I love that film...I've only seen it once but it's great...got a little confusing towards the end but what the hay Edward Norton and Brad Pitt made up for that!
And Schindlers list is one of my favorite films...I always cry when that little girl in the red coat comes along the worst thing is Schilder tried so hard to save everyone but couldn't. I must buy that film really!
*tries to divert the conversation away from death*
I also like Ferris Buellers Day Out...thats a fun film!
And Bringing up baby!
...And I can't wait for the Lord of the Rings to come out!

YES!!! Hilary in Boys Don't Cry was awesome - here she is so beautiful, and yet ten minutes in, I had to keep reminding myself she wasn't a boy. More than the awful ending, I was moved by the sheer joy she showed in her eyes when she got to 'play' with the guys - like riding the back of the pick-up truck and so on! Also I thought the performance of the irresponsible beer-drinking mother and especially the girl with the baby (the one who used to play 'Becky" on Roseanne) were superb. It seems every irresponsible group of kids has one girl who kind of 'mother hens' the gang, drives when they are too drunk, etc. and that girl played the type to perfection! What happened in her case shocked me way more than what happened to Barandon, which I was aware of from news stories.

i loved fight club, but considering how it ended i don't think i could watch it the same way as i first did now. i saw bridge on the river kwai when i was fairly young so it made quite an impression, though maybe not quite the same one the director had intended. i don't remember much more about the movie than the courage showed by the soldiers and, of course, Colonel Bogey's marching tune.
