h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

The BBC is quite capable of telling us that sites it links to are not under its control. Apply the same rule to h2g2, with a rapid response to any message about things that don't conform to the house rules. If the moderation/censorship is efficient there is no need for such communications. If they trust us, they will say it's not their words and wipe the worst. Let's appeal to basic intelligence.

(I vaguely recognize that it might be a quote from the old bit about a German who did not react to Jews and Gypsies and subversives being eliminated from Nazi Germany, but I can't quite tell if that's what you mean.)

No. In fact, you can currently discuss uk politics in particular, and the general election in even more particular. The entry that was linked to is currently under construction (though this isnt clear) and is not yet 'active'.

According to the current plan, which may be changed, when the UK election is announced, until it is finished, you will need to go elsewhere on the BBC's site to discuss it. You will still be able to discuss political issues, both UK and worldwide.

Yes. I believe there are already several entries on comics in the guide, including one on Judge Dredd. You can discuss commercial ventures of any kind, provided you don't breach the T&C.

THANK YOU! So I'm not totally losing my mind* yet? I thought people were going to start telling me that grass is pink and the sun is black. Now I can at least cite your theoretically unbiased opinion that Mark's "h2g2 and the UK General Election" page was not clear.

Zaphodistas are now taking donations to buy Mark a word processor so he can save entries and edit them before posting them. (I would have thought BBC would provide such things, but we've all been learning a lot about the BBC lately.)

I don't know if you chose your name for this reason, or if you ever heard this story. Your nickname reminded me of something I recently read in "A People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn.

Apparently during the civil rights protests in the U.S. South, sometime in the 1960s, there was a ten-year-old boy who was taken to jail with a large group of protesters. When in the process of filling out paperwork a cop asked the little boy what his name was, the boy said, "Freedom."

I don't know if it's a true story, or if the kid realized the statement he was making, but even if it didn't happen, it makes a great story.

From what tv or radio show does this wav file originate? I just realized how wrong we were to think we could use that same word! You see, they clearly allow swearing here at BBC's h2g2, when swearing is done in the context of art. That show is actually "art," but the words we write are just, well, "s***e" I suppose.
