THE POT STILL, at 154 Hope Street in Glasgow, has literally hundreds of malt whiskeys to select from. Named after the earliest whisky stills, lovers of good Scotch have come from all over the world to the Pot and returned time and time again. It is not unusual to see Americans, Germans, Swedes, Danes, Japanese and Irish jostling with Glaswegian regulars at the bar for service from attentive and cheery staff.
Many famous artistes have been spotted enjoying the unique atmosphere of The Pot Still while taking a break from their performances in nearby theatres. The Theatre Royal is a couple of hundred yards up Hope Street, the Royal Concert Hall only minutes away at the head of Buchanan Street, the Pavilion even closer on Renfield Street and the King's Theatre only a 10 minute walk away on Bath Street. You can visit the Pot Still website for further information at http://www.thepotstill.co.uk

The Pot Still - one of those poncey city centre howffs, eh? Full of pretentious arty-farty's, would-be intellectuals, hoors and comic singers. If you want actors, go to the Tron - it's an eye-opener.
No, give me a real pub - the Halt in Woodlands Road - you can't miss it, it's opposite the statue of Lobey Dosser, Elfie and Rankbadyin. The lounge is for live music to suit most tastes, and the bar for really good beer, good service no fancy lighting, quiet telly, lots of talk. In short, a REAL pub. Also worth a mention is, of course, the Doublet in Park Road, another real pub, informal, roomy, old fashioned without being self-conscious about it. And, of course, surrounded by some of the best curry houses in Glasgow, which is, after all the Curry Centre of the Universe.
Even Ra Byres Road has some decent pubs - the Curlers, Tennants', the Rubaiyat, all very bearable except just after the beginning of the University term when students are flush.
Town has got itself a bad name for pubs and eateries (which are in general awful) - all down to the City Fathers, aka in this case the Licensing Board. Not all (indeed, a very small majority) of Weegies are yuppies and showoffs.
And I don't even drink!

I don't think so. This entry was put in three weeks ago (the person who submitted it isn't the writer) and s/he hasn't posted since.

Shall we move to the Flea Market, then?
The original entry, if combined with the suggestions on the thread, could well be a good candidate for the EG.

That seems pretty reasonable to me.
Though I'll let you do the e-mail. I'm still feeling rather annoyed at the italics for having a total 'sense of humour bypass' over my reminding them to look into the Yahoo backlog

I saw that, and it did surprise me a bit... I've generally found Sam to be the most laid-back and approachable of all the Italics. Perhaps it's the perennial problem of something written in a jokey way (and that's how I read it, definitely) not being interpreted as such. Maybe you just caught him on a sensitive point or on a stressed-out day?
A couple of years ago, I ran into an old friend of my ex-girlfriend who was doing that 'stopping people on the street and trying to get them to contribute to charity' thing. We had a nice old chat, swapped email addresses and so on... I sent her a message which gave her the answer to a question she'd asked me, and closed with what was supposed to be a throwaway jokey compliment, along the lines of 'great to see you, and you look great, particularly for someone who spends so much time hanging round on street corners...'. She's not been back in touch since, and I strongly suspect she didn't take it as a compliment... Maybe I should have used a smiley, but I've always been reticent about using them outside h2g2.

Ultimately I'm not too bothered really, as I do have a wonderful memory of Sam trying to ponce a cigarette off of me at the end of the Summer meet.
The poor chap was so pissed he couldn't stand up straight. He couldn't work out how to light the thing when I handed over a Marlboro. And when he tried to speak, it came out as gibberish accompanied by a certain quantity of dribble
