Another Talkboard!
Hello, ladykelvin speaking.
True Confession - I am a Talkboard junkie.
Proof: see www.Guardianunlimited.co.uk Talk. My username there is scottie. I chose it, not because I like shortbread (Pattersons have a picture of a pair of Scottie dogs on the tin - what you might call a 'biscuit box' picture), but because I like cats. Work that one out. Yes, I'm contrary. And difficult. And argumentative, which is why I like talkboards.
In real life I am a retired Civil Servant living in the West End of Glasgow - just up the hill from BBC Scotland, actually. I speak (more or less), read and write French, but my German and Russian, which I studied at Glasgow University in the sixties are now rusty from misuse. I graduated MA in 1968.
I love words - grammar, etymology, parts of speech, figures of speech etc.
I am socialist in political outlook, tending towards anarchy (in the correct sense of the word). As you might gather, I am an atheist.
I am an inveterate reader, mainly of fiction of most kinds, but have a weakness for history (Plantagenets and Tudors) and biography.
Sorry, BBC, but the vast majority of television is not worth watching. I see too many talking heads, which would be much more at home on radio; too many 'life-style' programmes, which are far too aspirational for most people; too little main-stream comedy, the more eccentric 'skit' programmes shown at unrealistic times. Too much entertainment which is not entertaining, and not enough information presented in a watchable way. (sorry, Lord Reith.) I have to say, though, that BBC drama, whether flimsy (Casualty etc) or weightier is without compare. Writing, acting, lighting, all down to the smallest detail ,are the prides of the BBC. American 'drama' is awful, and far too prevalent. A possible solution would be to raise the licence fee, means-test it, and spend the money on original work.
Radio Three, though - what would I do without it?
I cook from scratch (I love food), I do not approve of pre-prepared food from a political point of view, as well as a nutritional one. Anyway it tastes nicer cooked at home. The freezer is a boon.
I use a Mac Powerbook, which is both my joy and my despair. Luckily my elder son is fairly nifty around systems - what is called a qwertywonk, I believe.
I sound stern and rather Puritan, but have a lively and rather wicked sense of humour. I am short on pretentiousness, and arrant, unnecessary stupidity in others - in other words, I do not tolerate fools gladly.
I'd better stop now, one of my many failings is showing - prolixity.
