I am a medium fan of the dune series.
so, would the movie be worthwhile for me or is it only for dunies?

The David Lynch film I feel is worth seeing - I saw it for the first time when I was halfway through reading the first novel, so I wasn't a die-hard Dune fan by any means. As for the recent TV series - sadly I haven't seen it yet as it has not been shown or released in the UK. Which I am Very annoyed about smiley - grr...

The movie is worth seeing provided you accept that it is a movie and not a literal recreation of the book.

Some people get terribly offended when books are filmed and things are changed (I tend to view it as necessary given the different media). But if you are someone who feels that way you should probably avoid the movie.

But as you describe yourself as a "medium fan" - you should enjoy it. Just relax and enjoy the art of the film, and try not to be too disappointed that a lot of the descriptions of motives etc. have gone.

Having watched the DVD of the Universal cut (or the Alan Smithee version) of the film last night I can only say I found it woeful - for all the previously edited scenes which were restored so much more is lost due to cackhanded editing & the awful new narration.

As soon as the titles start rolling you see the mettle of this poor attempt - where Alan Smithee has been substituted for David Lynch the grammer hasn't been sorted thus advising this is A Alan Smithee Film, rather than An. Things just go downhill from there. As its edited for Prime Time US TV audiences any gore or scenes involving bodily fluids are gone & you have inummerable advert insert breaks to put up with - many of which don't quite wait for a scene end before arriving. Even scenes which are included to attempt to make the film more understandable to the first time viewer (i.e. Paul's fight with Jamis)fail to do this as they themselves are not explained but flung in in the vague direction of continuity.

Somewhere out there a great version of this picture exists but Universal should be ashamed of releasing this sorry affair. Stick to the original - at least it was edited by someone emotionally involved with the work & not some delinquent with a cleaver.

Most definitely! It follows the novel very closely and is beautifully casted, filmed and produced. Much better than the idealised Lynch version. In the mini-series, Paul really struggles with his sense of self and the numbing sense of being an Atreides.

Not to mention the continuity from "Children Of Dune" (even if it is a combination of "Messiah" and "Children", it still works well.) Although I found many scenes less dramatic in the mini-series.

When viewing the mini-series you should forget that you have ever seen the Lynch film and you will enjoy it more. It follows the book more closely, as you can with a mini-series.

The Dune and Children of Dune were shown on the sci-fi channel and the Hallmark channel in the past. They are both available on DVD in Britain.

Do you know if there are any plans to make "God Emperor Of Dune"?

Dune 2000 And Children of Dune have both been on the sci-fi channel recently they are quite good especially Children of Dune, this is a combination of the books Dune Messiah and Children of Dune if you liked the original Dune film then i think you would definetly enjoy the new version's, personaly though i dont think unless you have read Dune you should really watch the original film, as it is quite hard to understand what is going on, David Lynch didnt really do the book justice in my eyes. smiley - kiss

Its worth a watch, seems bad at first but gets better.

Both films had outstanding features, but both had different flaws that ruined them for me, I’d say Sci-Fi’s is the strongest for fans of the books (yet still weak).

The main flaws being the embarrassing special effects and backgrounds that are of very poor taste (the combat scenes look like the bastard offspring of old game FMVs and the Power Rangers) but the pro’s being the closeness to the story (despite missing the ever-so important internal narration) and the quality and depth in the portrayal of the characters, the Baron in particular.

If you like the Dune books, then I can recommend the SciFi channel tv version which is available on DVD. (see ebay for cheap versions). I personally think they are better than the "original" film. Haven't seen the new film, anyone out there has ???

The book is brilliant! The 80's film is good too. I have heard so much against it - but it is true in spirit to the book, and as said by others- the casting was very good indeed.

Yes i saw the film first, and loved it, after rewatching it on dvd a while back i thought why havn't i read the book yet ( Dune was one of my favourite films ), so just finished reading the book last week - it's perfect what a story, what a ride, what a happy feeling after reading the the last page, sentence, and word. Fantastic.

Gotta read it again for sure. I can see peoples critisisms with the film but i loved it and think in the amount of time the director had to tell the story he done a great job, and what a cast, it is great also i think.

I agree - I love both the book and the film, but like you I saw the film first. I think most people who disliked the film had read the book first, and yes, the film does leave a lot out (as films generally have to), but still is an amazing film. I love the soundtrack.

Enjoy reading the sequels!
