h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

So I just came across a thread in the Lounge about h2 having been around for SEVENTEEN YEARS! Holy crap! Where did THAT time go?!

So I spent a few moments thinking about what has endured for me in those seventeen years (although I won't hit my 17th hootoo-versary until September).

Argon0 was my Ace 17 years ago.

Ormondroyd and Ottox were among the first people I met here.

Also from days gone by: Greydesk, Afgncaap5, Uncle Heavy, Bob-n-Elly, Goshogoshogosh, Parrferris, Shea the Sarcastic, Sad Mad or Bad, King Chthulu, Master B, Acidbath, paulh, Dragonfly, Galaxy Babe, and so many others. (And seventeen years on, I still keep in contact with about half the people I just listed - the magic of the interwebs as I've never met *any* of them in person)

I've spent hours playing hamster golf in the gardens at the palace in Balwyniti. I've had Crater Labs deliver snowballs to some of my closest h2 friends. I vaguely remember going on some kind of adventure, but I can't remember what group it was with. I've never made it to the Atlier, but after so many years now I'm not sure why not. I've ACEd, Angeled, Archived, Scouted, Edited, Written, Created, Mined, Polished, and contributed.

I survived n2g2, and single sign on.

My Facebook friends list is rich and colorful with the virtual friends I've made here, and I am in awe of the bonds that have been formed over the years.

h2g2, and Number 6 in particular, are responsible for my fascination with Route 66. What an incredible and lasting gift that discovery was! I now take my whole family on at least one Route 66 road trip every summer, and it's something everyone looks forward to and anticipates. In 2007 we took an entire week-long trip through Oklahoma and Texas on 66, met up with a couple of h2-ers on the way, and it's still one of our most fondly remembered family vacations.

I know the site isn't what it used to be. But it still has all the vital elements that made it what it was. Even though I don't spend a fraction of the time here that I used to, I would be very, very sad if it ever ceased to be.

I'm a relative newcomer, only having been here for 7 years. Feisor was my Ace, and I met Icy North and Gnomon in my first foray into Peer Review.

I've been to two Meets.

I go in the Atelier (although I have a bit of a backlog to catch up on - must look at that later)

I also set up a h2g2 religion - the Monastery of the Order of the Towel, with KB as founder of the philosophy

The Palace Flophouse and Grill, over at the Procrastinators HQ, has been pretty quiet... but I think we've all just put off going there until we get around to it, or need to put off something else by going there

Once upon a time I had a fourth account that I used to be anonymously passive aggressive without my comments being tied to my primary account. I was an ACE at the time, and posting as a complete b!+@# seemed to be at odds with convincing newbies this was a friendly place to hang. I've forgotten what I even named that account.
