Welcome, Angelwings and King Wolf! You've both been added to the Musicians Guild's membership roster. Do check out the threads for the Guild's main page to see what we've been discussing lately. There's also a link from one thread to the instructions to put the Membership Graphic on your personal page.
Just FYI for everyone, I'm leaving for vacation in a couple of hours. I won't be back until October 11th, so page updates for the Guild will have to wait until then. You can all continue to chat and work together, though.

I'd like to join the guild, for reasons which will become clear to me I'm sure after I get some much-needed sleep. Actually, I play guitar, bass, tenor saxophone, clarinet, organ, and I'm a competent if not inspired drummer. I've also sang, but I'm a much better instrumentalist--whether or not this says much for my playing ability is a matter of opinion. I enjoy many types of music, and would be happy listening to anything from Beethoven or Vivaldi(my favorite classical composer) to Wynton Marsalis or the Dave Brubeck Quartet(favorite jazz group) to B. B. King to Pink Floyd to Led Zeppelin to They Might Be Giants to Eric Clapton to Metallica to Rage Against the Machine to... other things. Just not rap, dance, or country. In terms of playing music, the guitar is my favorite instrument because it's so much easier than anything else(I'm attempting to learn the violin, and having a much tougher time). I enjoy playing jazz, blues, and rock and roll.
What can I offer? Well, I have a respectable amount of experience for an 18 year old, from types of music, to technique, to performance, to recording(well, experience in staying up for about 28 hours straight with 3 friends and ending up with about a minute and a half of bad recording, but experience nonetheless). I'd be happy to offer my services as a guitarist to anyone in the central-eastern Illinois area.
What would I like to get out of the group? Right now I just really wish I could remember the name for the band I intend to start, the name I came up with last weekend when I was drunk, I have no idea what it was, but I remember that it was absolutely PERFECT, I tell you, it was! But you guys probably can't help me with that. I don't know, ask me in the morning, I'm going to bed or I'll pass out in class tomorrow.

Good Evening,
I would like to join the Musicians Guild.
I play guitar (most any style really) and am a bit of a wiz at the old home-recording.
Favourite musicians: Ooooh, too many to list but if pushed would say Miles Davis, John Martyn, Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Harris, Jonny Greenwood, Frank Sinatra, Shaznay Lewis, Dave Grusin, Ruichi Sakamoto, ... see, you got me started.
I work very odd hours, and I really miss playing with others so if you're reading this, live in Sarf London and fancy a jam then leave a message.
That's all, thanx for listening

Hi. *waves*
I play flute, sing, and am teaching myself acoustic guitar and piano. I also do some composing on said piano, but whether or not that's a good thing is up to your ears' discretion.
My favorite modern composer has to be John Williams.... but as far as more "classical" music goes, I love Hadyn, Beethovan, certain Mozart pieces, and Pachebel. I don't actually have a favorite band, per say, except perhaps my high school band... but favorite might be too strong of a word there...
I'm not sure exactly what I want out of the group... maybe just more contact with people who have my interests. Something like that. Instrumentalists tend to be wonderful people. I guess we shall see.

I would say that if this guild is a system of apprenticeship --> journeymanship --> master, I am somewhere in my beginning journey(wo)man stage. I don't know if I will ever attain mastery -- it's so difficult to focus long enough and hard enough on a single point of mastery when you want to know it all!!
In any case:
I play the piano, the violin, the trombone, and I fiddle with others. I also love to sing.
Favourite artists, a list I could start building now and die trying to finish. A couple of examples: Beethoven, Vivaldi, Michael Jackson, Loreena McKennit, Sarah McLachlan, Smash Mouth, Eminem, Bob Marley, Cat Stevens, etc etc ad infinitum...
I know a little GuideML, but haven't done a whole lot with it at all. I would love to help any way I can (my decided lack of free time as a new university student notwithstanding). I'd like to hear other peoples tastes in music, discuss what I know with others who know it, and what I don't know with others who can inform me, and have a good conversation/debate once in a while over the merits of particular aspects. I like performing, researching, some composing, anything.

Hello, can I join too?
What instrument(s) do you play, or want to play?
I was one of those poor, hard-done-by kids who was forced by keen parents to take music lessons after school. At least that's what I thought at the time. Now, I think that I am very very lucky because I was dragged (kicking and screaming) through the period of learning instruments when you sound screamingly awful at a time of my life when I just DIDN'T KNOW that I sounded screamingly awful. I'm sure my parents noticed though. Anyhow, the result of this is that I play the Oboe, Violin, Piano, and I love singing (Alto). I also had a try at the guitar, but I just couldn't get my left hand strong enough to stop the strings properly.
Do you have a favorite composer, musical artist, or band?
I love twentieth century English composers - Elgar of course, but also Vaughan-Williams, Walton, Bax, Harty, etc. I think this comes from the fact that alot of them were writing lots of oboe music. Also, in the same way that (well, I imagine) Sibelius' music JUST DOES represent something particularly Finnish, these composers really do capture something about England. Or at least, my rose-tinted view of what England is.
On the other side, I love thoughtful but poppy (read 'approachable') singer-songwriters like the Indigo Girls, Tori Amos, Alanis Morisette. Yes these are all women. No I don't know why.
Is there anything in particular you would like from the Musicians Guild, or anything special you want to
contribute?
Can I think about this one?

Jack Point Posted Oct 22, 2000
Hi there. I'd like to join the Musicians Guild. Two of my guide entries have been referenced by the Guild, so I figure I ought to apply for membership.
I am mostly a pianist nowadays, though I have been known to play clarinet, bass clarinet, and tenor saxaphone. I also sing, but usually only in the shower.
My taste in music is quite eclectic, so I have all sorts of favorite composers, bands, and artists. I don't think I could name them all, however here is a sampling: Beethoven, Aaron Copland, Scott Joplin, Tom Lehrer, Weird Al Yankovic, Savage Garden.
I'm afraid I don't visit H2G2 often enough to be a major contributor, nor to have any requests. I merely wish to add my voice to the chorus proclaiming good music as one of the essential elements of life, sharing the top of the list with food, oxygen, and sex.
Best regards...

Dubious Use of the World's Resources (fka keicher) Posted Oct 25, 2000
Evening All,
Here we go with the long drawn-out guild membership application:
What instrument(s) do you play, or want to play?
I play piano semi-pro, do a bit of choral singing as well. In the past I've played French Horn, drums and in the future I want to play bass trombone (purely for playing Richard Strauss and the ends of Rossini overtures), bass guitar and maybe some funky Hammond. I'm one of those pianists who is mildly blinkered by their classical technique and who's finding jazz annoyingly hard to play.
Do you have a favorite composer, musical artist, or band?
Oh where do I start. Classical: Tchaikovsky, Prokovief, R.Strauss, Mahler, Verdi, Puccini etc. Jazz: Fats Waller, Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Charlie Parker, Thelonius Monk, Jimmy Smith, John Coltrane (mainly piano stuff). Other: sixties stuff (Beatles, Small Faces, Kinks, Stones, Dylan etc)
Is there anything in particular you would like from the Musicians Guild, or anything special you want to
contribute?
Not in particular, just to find out how passionate other people can be about the music they love. And maybe to do some shop talk from time to time.

Jazz piano can be annoyingly hard to play. I know.
I think bass trombone would be an interesting instrument to play. But I doubt I have the necessary arm length.
Welcome, Keicher. I've added you to our membership list. If you check the message above yours, you'll see a little handy info for new members.
