Wow... this question certainly created some feedback... ~grin~... me has looked really well into all the possible answers... and found two me thought to be correct... they were... Doctor Gonzo with a hole... and Ming Mang with Space... me is awarding each one a point...
If you want to argue about this... please do... ~grin~...

you cannot see a hole!! You only can see the absence of the substance that the hole is in and therefor whatever is behind it.
Also you cannot see space, you only see stars and planets and nebula etc. Also space does exist of something (neutrino's (?)).
I think both answers are very wrong.

This is what me likes... heated debate... ~grin~
Me defends myslef by saying... of course you can see a hole... and sopace for that matter... ~grin~... the space is not the space meaing the stars etcetra... its the space left behind when something is removed...
Example... me removed the next word... " " ... you can see the SPACE where the word was... but there is nothing there... so space wins a point...
Its the same with hole... a hole is made of nothing... yet you can still see it...
hope this helps... a little...

Hmmm... sorry about all the spelling mistakes... my claws get in the way on the keyboard sometimes... ~grin~
Another apple-logie... for the absence of space where the word had been removed... H2G2 does not like space... and so therefore filled it in... but me thinks you will understand what me means...

yes but you still cannot see the space. You see that something is missing, i.e. you see air/light/backgorund instead of the thing that you were expecting to see. But you still cannot see the space.
And your example of the a " " as a space does not stand as the 'space' is a thing on the computer. We have a space bar that adds in spaces. And spaces exist of spaces.

It must be a word containing 'nothing' like 'knot hinges' or nothingness or Nothingham.

Just to clear up my earlier post (25)
The answer must be "nothing". Meaning there isn't an answer.
So nothing is made from nothing but can still be seen.
Or nothing is made from nothing but you can still see *it*
Where it means nothing so you can see nothing which was the it described in the question.
Or is it 42?
Just substitute nothing into the question. It makes sense. Maybe.

I'm still sticking to the fact that you can make 'gin' out of 'nothing' and in the absence of a I'll put some in here *hic*
h2g2 doesn't like space. Is that proof it exists then?
