Right, so this is one of my pet hates, OK?
I simply just can't see the use of having a conversation exchanging various smilies and no conversation to speak of...
...and yet, I have to keep up with some of those conversations... *sighs*
And yet - for various reasons - I have to keep up with some of the conversations used to exchange smilies... calm down, dear - calm down...

'and yet' - oh boy, do I come across as a sensible person - or not? Blame it on my ongoing cold...

But isn't it sometimes quite the same IRL. People are using only facial expressions and body talk.
Still, to be honest I prefer usually words, too. Just not *always*. Sometimes I get fed up with those. And atm I am completely scared by 400+ backlog somewhere.

What she said! Sometimes I see that there's been a new post to a conversation that I'm interested in and go there, all expectant, only to discover only a bookmark or a smiley...

Just curious... Why do you feel you _have_ to follow certain conversations that have degenerated into smiley fests?
Most of the time once they go that way then they're unlikely to return to the initial subject... Admittedly it can be a real pain in the neck when you're trying to stay on-topic (which of course is not something I'm particularly good at!)
Why not just unsubscribe? Or is that not an option for some of your conversations?

Because I'm a reporter! That's why! And I need to keep an eye on future meet-ups-to-be - and some of those conversations are... are... argghhh!

Ahh, got it! Sorry, didn't mean to wind you up even further...
(For once I'm being serious)
Erm... Am I going to get lynched if I stick a smiley hug into this conversation in an attempt to cheer you up?
Alternatively, I could start a conversation somewhere where you could pelt me with virtual fruit for a while... That might help!

*tries to stay serious, but the presence of Whisky just makes it impossible*
Well, I could just hurl various vegs and cakes at you in this thread, couldn't I?

Oops - sorry to those who thought this journal might be a smiley-free conversation...
It's just not going to happen - not with Whisky around...

**looks innocently around him and whistles**
I'd just like everyone to take note of the fact that up until now I hadn't used a single smiley in this conversation, I've been restrained, polite and sensible... and finally, that....
SHE STARTED IT!!!

I like smilies. They're cute and expressive and I use them quite a lot. They are one of the cool things about this website. But they aren't a substitute for conversation.

And here I go around, constantly trying to improve my posts with appropriate smilies... Perhaps I give up, and just use the alphabet?

Right. All text then. *sulks just a little* I thought I was getting the hang of it! Oh well.
I reserve the right to use my towel at any time though.

I think smileys should be banned in convos where it's a serious discussion.
But there's usually such topic drift you wonder if you clicked the right thread link - when you get there and find a totally different conversation going on - or a whole load of single smileys posted.
I love the smileys on hootoo, but I agree, it's annoying when someone has bookmarked and not spoken.
I gave up worrying about backlog a l-o-n-g time ago.
*shrug*
