...is the reason why I haven't been much online at h2g2 during evenings and weekends lately:

You'll find me there as flamedancer
Warning! You might end up spending money!
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4385048.stm
I started out with the idea to *not* spend any money at all. I got a mentor who has been really helpful and who teamed up with me so that I could get enough money to buy a weapon (axe).
However, what little money I could make from gathering and selling sweat and animal hides was spent on repairing my axe...
...so I succumbed and invested the equivalence of 10 USD which I partly used to get myself a healing gadget, a pistol and mining equipment - and asked my mentor to teach me how to mine.
Mining seems to be a bit more rewarding than hunting, at least until you've developped your skills. I'm hoping that I'll get by without investing any more RL

Hmm.
It looks like a complicated game, where you might wind up investing a lot of real cash, much more than you expected.
I think I will stick with Ravenblack and Gothador for the time being.

The money goes to the company who developped the game and on whose servers it's running (MindArk) - you wouldn't expect them to offer it for free, do you?
Compare with how much it would cost to buy a PC game.
And you can get by without spending any money at all (you don't need to buy food to survive, for example) but if you want to make some progress, I think it takes much more patience than I possess to do it without investing.
Some players make quite a lot of money trading - but that also takes patience, besides knowledge of the market. I noticed one female buying animal sweat off newbies for the decent price of 2 PED (Project Entropia Dollars) per 100 units and then, when she had acquired a considerable amount of units, selling them for 2.10 per 100 units (and no, I haven't figured out what kind of process it is that requires sweat, but there's obviously a demand).
Xena? Now there's a look! Unfortunately, buying clothes like that and get my hair done costs so much money that it isn't my immediate focus - I'm currently working on getting enough armour parts to hide my bright orange newbie uniform...
Whisky - I've been thinking of getting a cooler weapon than a simple axe - like a whip for example - would you like that better?

Well, I'm still very enthusiastic about the game, and I've joined the society Irken Invaders - a nice bunch of players, really helpful.
After the latest update, it's now actually possible to use a whip on animals, to tame them - haven't tried it yet, since it'll cost money to keep them alive and tame. They need to be brushed and fed, among other things...
Yesterday I managed to kill a Berycled Old, which gave me 25 PED in loot (2.50 USD) and I also managed to kill an Atrax Young on my own, even though it took me three attempts because it kept killing me all the time!

You usually don't kill people, unless you're in a PvP area (Person versus Person) and those are clearly marked - or unless you step into a fighting ring to measure your skills against another player.
The Berycleds look like some kind of small dinosaur with wings, but they can't fly. They jump around a lot, so they can be a bit difficult to hit.
The Atrax is a bigger kind of dinosaur - and the Atrox is even bigger, and meaner. Those two kinds of creatures will spot your presence a mile away and, so far, they run faster than I do!

This is the picture I use as a footer in my postings on said board:

And here is an image of my character getting killed by an Atrox Stalker (nasty beast, 100 damage points in one hit, and I only have 95 health points). Right after my character was killed, the Atrox in turn was killed by the turret that I had been running towards:

Odd - the picture links work for me - could be because I've already visited the entropiaforum dot com today, but I didn't log in...
Caer, can you start the login window of the game? If you can, there are links where you can check if your computer meets all the requirements, like the right drive routines (?) for your graphic card and other stuff.

Coniraya Posted Dec 13, 2005
Yes, I can get to the login window. If my PC can run SWG, the most demanding game ever hardware wise, it should run Entropia with out a problem. At the moment I cba to do anything about it as I'm hoping to get a new PC for Xmas.

After having searched the PE forum, I found this:
Have you applied for an account, recieved an activation e-mail and activated your account?
From a support case:
"PE supports NVIDIA GeForce or ATI Radeon graphics cards only."
Try changing the speed of your Internet connection in the Option menu.
This might seem like a silly question, but have you made sure that you type your login details into the bottom field?
Do you have a bottom field? If not, you might be trying to log in to the website, not the clientloader.
Have you set you're desktop resolution to 1024 x 768? Because the clientloader requires a minimum of 1024 x 768, or you won't be able to see the whole clientloader on the screen.
There's got to be a specific reason, because I'm running the game on a laptop (Compaq Presario R3000) without the slightest problem - well, apart from when I've been playing for several hours in a row, it tends to get a bit too warm then... addicted, me?

The links are missing the end. I cut and pasted from the first link, and came up with this:

Is that your head flying off towards the tower?

That's my soul hovering above my dead body, or something like that...
Odd - the link you posted d'E doesn't work for me...

taliesin Posted Dec 16, 2005
The links don't work for me, either...
But if I left-click one of the links, select properties from the context menu, copy everything _except_ the part that says: http://www.bbc.co.uk/go/dna/h2g2/brunel/F45492/ext/_auto/- , then paste the link in the browser address bar, the link works..
Something weird going on with hootoo's linking thingamabob
