Happy St George Day, those who care: http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/historic_figures/george_st.shtml and I'd also like to honour A795602 William Shakespeare on his birthday (they think), also the day he passed on to another world. I'm not going to be around much for the next two weeks, I won't be taking on any more subbings when I've finished the one I have remaining or doing any writing - not a strike but more a bit of time off - while I sort out a few things in my RL and do some spring cleaning, which I find is always good soulfood. My Stretcher reviews are already done smiley - biro and I've written my Post column already.

Sounds too much like hard work to me!

Have a good break smiley - cool

Oh, I can never get excited about St George's Day because we English somehow got landed with the wrong saint. George (presumably not his real name) wasn't English, didn't speak English and probably never set foot in England. He's only notable today for some myth about a dragon and for the red cross which has become an emblem for football hooliganism.

A better choice would be St Edmund the Martyr: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/05295a.htm

If you're ever passing Bury St Edmunds, pop in to the newly-restored cathedral and learn all about him.

smiley - cheers Icy

MMF - Keeper of Mustelids, with added P.M.A., is now in a relationship.

England flag cufflinks to the fore...

Now off to get my smiley - rose from the Florist...

Sorted.

Not so much pro-St George, more a demonstration of Englishness in the light of
all the cries of Independence from certain (limited) factions of Britain...

And the fact that Newtman would celebrate everything in Trafalgar Square except St. George's Day.

For those interested, this year there is almost six hours of Live music in the square including Seth Lakeman, Kathryn Tickell, Eliza Carthy and the Demon Barbers, amongst others...

Oh, what a pity. Of course, Ireland's very successful "St Patrick's Day" was invented by the Americans.

My father jokes that he considered calling me George, given the day that was in it, but such a thing would have been impossible to an Irish catholic in 1960.
