It would have made much more sense to be unable to enter the same nickname as someone else in the first place.
However, is one able to check a list to find out if the nickname one has selected is currently unique?

Yes, click on advanced search at the top of any page and type your nickname in the Search for a Friend bit. Hope this helps.

This site appears to have committed one of the classic moronic Catch-22s. When I go into Preferences, I am required to add certain personal data before getting at the nickname field. On entering the data, I am informed the nickname I have is already in use. Indeed it is, by me.
This will probably be my last posting here. I'm no longer patient with this kind of stupidity.

Please don't go. I'm sure we can sort this out. Can you explain what you are doing and what happens? What info does it ask you for?

you can change your nickname at any time just go to preferences and delete old one
