Who would like to come?
To help you decide, here are some ideas:
When: 10 September (Saturday) or 11 September (Sunday) or 18 September (Sunday). Alternatively, in October, around 3 October/in the autumn half-term holiday.
Where: Heidelberg
What: Meet at the main station about 10-11 a.m., tram into the centre, walk about town. Lunch in one of the famous student pubs, afternoon: boat trip on the Neckar, coffee and/or a walk along the "Philosophenweg" - dinner.
From my experience of H2G2 meets you usually go from one pub to the next cafe to a restaurant and sit there and talk till the last train is due to go.
I would be happy to suss out a few suitable places to eat/drink/have coffee to save us time looking.
To book a guided tour in German (just the old town with castle) costs 87 Euros. Takes 2 hours. I would recommend doing that, if there's enough of us to cover the cost. (at least 10 of us)
The boats go anyway, and for a 3-hour trip on the Neckar it costs 9 Euros 50. The shorter trip, just around HD, 40 mins, costs 3 euros 50. Actually being on the boat is not much fun, they are fairly dirty and sticky from what I remember, but whether we do that can be decided ad hoc, as we don't have to book, just hop on.

PS - if anyone lives too far away to get home the same night, I shall probably come by car and can take people home to spend the night at our house to catch a train back the next morning if necessary.

September would be fine, October not, not the 3rd anyway.

I'll have 2 exams in the first week of October, so: no way.

Would anyone mind one of the Sundays? Or would you prefer a Saturday? (shops are open, you have the next morning to get back home, etc etc)
The first meet I ever went to, we met on the Saturday lunchtime and were still talking the next day till about 2 pm, and I had to be given a lift to Pforzheim because there were no more trains from where we were.

I think in light of that, Saturday is a good idea. I'd probably be looking online for someone to take me, and weekends are most likely to be a success.

Maybe I'll combine it with getting my car from Bavaria.

for me every day is as good as the other
you know how long the train needs to get from Vienna to Heidelberg? 9-10 hours that's more than to Venice

Seems free for me so far, but might interfere with exams, as they'Re supposed to be very shortly before September 20th.

Which would mean Monday, 19th ? Because I can't imagine you'll have an exam on a Saturday, or Sunday - not here in Germany

Could be - or Friday.
Might interfere with my travel arrangments either way, I'll have to wait and see. Problem is if it's Monday I'll need the weekend for last-minute model building and getting my plots plotted.
