Freaks are generally the LEAST accepting of the cliques.
And preps are the MOST accepting.
It's that way in my school, and I believe such would hold true in most American high schools. It's simple reasoning...I hope.
Freaks generally choose to be freaks for their "mainstream"(it's more popular than they'd like to think) belief that the mainstream is superficial and full of jerks. Once they have bought into this idea, the style, clothing, etc., that they use to indicate that they are "different" from the jerks follows suit. The assumption that the rest of the world hates them for being different gives them an excuse to be jerks and unaccepting of everyone else FIRST, to prevent being "victimized" first. Most other people resent this unprovoked treatment, and don't understand that it's a defense mechanism thingy, so they give the freaks exactly what they want: hatred or resentment. Interesting strategy for the freaks that makes morale justification easy AND fun!
I find that preps are often defined as the "populars" or "trendies" as you overseasers put it (I know, on this site I'M the overseaser). This definition is exactly true. They are the people with the most friends. People make friends by being friendly. The preps are friendly. There you have it.
I know the Guide entry was based on US mainstream and media... I've just been talking about personal experience.
And also, this entire post is pretty much useless because, as someone else said, all generalizations are... something. I forget what he said. But they ARE bogus. I know some cool people who have spiky hair and wear wacky clothing. And one prep at my school... lets just say... he wasn't a friendly person.

the fact is there are people of every stereotype who are nice, mean, fake, trendy, intelligent, ingorant, deep and everywhere else along every spectrum. stereotypes are just that stereotypes and make no room for individuals, which everyone (whether they act like it or not) is. So to all stereotypes
from a metalhead/hippie/nerd(which is hypothetically impossible)

I have to say, in my city it is the complete oppisite. The preps are MEAN!!! They are constantly challenging you, making rude remarks, and acting like you are the jerk when you refuse to "take a joke." Those "jokes" are mostly made up of thinly veiled accusations and bullying. There are kids that wear prep clothes that are really nice, but by and by the preps are among the most aggresive clique in my city. The freaks are generally not so freaky, but they are people who will say random things and have a ton of inside jokes that they are willing to share. Yeah, there are freaks that are mean and totally jerks, but I find more of them wear preppy clothes and hang with the preppy kids then in the freak group.
