Devon knows how they make it so...

Actually, I think most of this applies at least equally to Wales (except perhaps the bit about cream teas)!
Devon is the place I was going to today *sob sniff* until my car broke down. Hmmm... so I wonder which age category I would fall into...?

The worst thing about Devon is it takes so looooooooooong to drive through when you're trying to get home to Cornwall

Sorry to rub salt in but today is a wonderful bright winters day, the leaves are many shades of brown, the sky is blue, so why am I indoors in a dark room linked to this damm computer?

Devon... is it any coincidence it rhymes with...
Well, I don't care, cos when I move I will be in Devon forever! And I will go for long walks on the beach both summer and winter... and laugh at the surfers!

No doubt the New Year midnight swim still takes place at Teignmouth - as practised by my ex-girlfriend while I stayed firmly on the beach

Just out of curiosity, was she your ex-girlfriend before, or is she now that she tried to get you to swim in freezing cold water at midnight on one of the coldest days of the year? Going for the Boxing Day walk on Wonwell beach was cold enough for me, never mind getting into the water...
I was actually going to write an article on driving/manoeuvering along Devon roads, but I see it's already been taken care of. I think the trick is to learn how to reverse really quickly ... or to figure out how to stare the approaching driver down, so they have to be the one to retreat backwards down the road looking for a place around which you can pass them (See my 'Tips For Devon Drivers' at my homepage...)

Only one tip for driving in Devon, Don't! Ride a bike instead, the only form of transport where you get to your destination grinning. (well unless you are Gillian Tellforth's boyfriend (sorry old UK tabloid story based joked))

Sorry about the delay in replying Gemma, I have been elsewhere in Cyberspace.
She was my current girlfriend at the time, and this was just another manifestation of the insanity which teenage love is very good at masking
I agree that reversing quickly is the best way to negotiate Devon roads, in fact anything which was good for the Dukes of Hazzard seems to work quite well Devon roads are a lot better than the ones up here in in the Peak District though, as there is usually a road cutting across the moor in roughly the direction that you want to go, even if it does have one of those "Unsuitable for motors" signs at the start of it. Although usually passable, such roads are occasionally designed to trap the brave, and I remember being driven backwards in a Morris Marina at snails pace through the 200 yards of deep pot-holes which we had successfully weaved our way around before we came to the pot-hole the size of a bomb crater which had put an end to our short cut
