I have a different theory about this. My guess is, that over the last couple of decades the number of satellites in orbit superseded some critical number, and with all the beaming down of non-relevant stuff people's brains got cooked. Evolutionary adaption calls for something to happen, and nature decided to, instead of everyone thinking for theirselves, it just let everyone's brain-functions be regulated by the constant transmissions. When people ride the subway, they're cut off, and all the higher brain functions seize. This does however not explain the newspapers.

It has been suggested that if some enterprising soul would install sturdy flat screen TV's in the elevators, trams, trains, and subway cars, thus allowing everyone something to look at (that something being lucrative advertising bits), said person would become obscenely rich fairly quickly, perhaps even rich enough to attract the attention of the aformentioned person W.

maybe they don't have a babbel fish inserted and so cannot understand the complexities of each others eye and not eye contact

we experienced the same phenomina in UK but here in New Zealand people are even stranger they look at you and talk to you... there is unbalance afoot... me thinks
