A Conversation for Quebec, Canada
Aboriginals and European settlement
Dreadnought Started conversation Nov 27, 1999
This was a great piece for the traveller, but there were a couple of factual errors about the Aboriginal relations with the European settlers that would leave Techumseh spinning in his grave:
When the French arrived (in an unknown and hostile land) they established an alliance with the Wendat (who they called the Huron) in order to survive. This would mean that they were *at war* with the Iroquois. The Iroquois sided with the British when they arrived (because the British were continually at war with the French) and there was a lot of rather brutal fighting and general bitterness. The complex alliance relationships the Europeans and the Aboriginals established is the stuff of another article, but I just wanted to set the record straight.
