h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

I've written an entry and spent ages getting the GuideML format correct. When I previewed it as GuideML it looked just fine, but when I click the GuideML box and add the entry, it looks like plain text with a whole load of stuff in brackets. Very frustrating, especially after hours of working on it! Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

It looks very much as though A2030833 must still be in plain text mode. You need to use the option (radio) buttons below the text entry box on the edit screen to switch modes. Just adding the and tags doesn't work. Have a look in the edit page screen again and see whether it says plain text rather than GuideML when the page opens.

Bizarrely, hitting the GuideML radio button and then hitting "submit entry" isn't enough to change an entry from plain text to GuideML format.

You need to hit the GuideML radio button, then hit the Change Style button. The page will then reload, with the entry previewed in the new format. *Now* hit "submit entry" or "update entry", and the change in format will take affect.

One useful trick is to go straight to <./>useredit?format=2</.>. Makes a great toolbar button.

I don't have it as a toolbar button but that *is* the sort of thing I've been doing a lot for the last many months (but with format=1 for GuideML since 2 is plain text mode). Though I never had trouble understanding the official method using radio buttons either.

Strangely enough I don't have trouble remembering it either - or maybe, more to the point, I don't exactly remember it but just instantly understand it afresh every time I see the page.

hmm, and I thought only the borg were perfect.

That link was one of those things which someone suggested we were supposed to be keeping secret. So, when I saw they had written that, I hid it from the bugfinders page where I had previously put it. However, if you are officially endorsing its use I can unhide it again next time I go into the account to update the blobfinders page.

This thread is woven from people replying to previous posts with simulposts inbetween! NB The borg (in various ways and at various times) said they were seeking perfection not that they had achieved it.

I'm not officially endorsing it SEF - how can I endorse something that I didn't know existed until you told me? If you've been told that it's not for common knowledge, then it shouldn't be discussed.

This shows why departments should share information a bit more.
