Oops, of the two links I'd found through Croz(?), U43626 was actually the earlier one! That might make more sense to you. Search shows more "shim"s but those are the links which indicate I'd already been to the pages.

U34439 has the photo of the team I'd seen before and which might include Shim. However, I don't know which is which (yellow towel could be Yoz comparing it with another photo) and you might not have met them anyway.

Shim sounds right. The FAQ used to have a question "How can i get that nice blue fish?" with the answer "Sitting at Shim's PC, being logged on as shim" or something along those lines. Unfortunately there is now the simple:

Croz(?) pointed me at a thread discussing Shim's blue fish but it wasn't clear whether that was before or after any FAQ (presumably long gone now along with the code that used to make the fish appear). The fish itself and the other fish are still around though. I had seen it elsewhere a long time ago and added it to A1924779 before the recent conversation about it, adding the rest of the old ones afterwards.

It's a very nice blue fish, but it isn't the same. There was a story behind the other one, this ones just a boring load of pixels.

Some time ago Peet was suggesting that everyone be allowed 2 blob images and a smiley. I think the idea was that the smiley might be available to anyone who put the U-number of that person in angle-brackets. However, it could be (or indeed may have been if I misread/misremembered it) the idea that there is just a single smiley code which displays the personal smiley for the person making the post (or owning the page) in each case - ie tied into other fields already used by the post/page to display the person's nickname. Once one gets that far with coding software though it is a very small step to having a personal avatar always displayed next to the name instead of being typed into a post at all.

I don't think the idea was ever thought through that far. I thought about it both ways, they are both good ideas. Prehaps could be parsed as when i do it, when jim does it, etc., to make it easier, but other people can still use them, by typing the U-number directly.
