Monday 11 March 2013 - Announcing Douglas Adams' 61st birthday

Douglas died too soon to experience the strange, sad, scary post-9/11 world. Vogons were pretty much the scariest creatures he wrote about, and even they were more amusing than scary. In the movie version, they were designed by those wonderful people who gave you Yoda and the Muppets, so how scary could they have been.
I can't help wondering whether the success of the Pratchett books might have inspired Douglas Adams to create fully-realized fantasy worlds of his own. We'll never know. Sadly, Douglas was in California, hoping that his proximity to the movie studios would give him an edge in getting Arthur Dent and company onto the silver screen. Instead, he left this world in a way so improbable that it could have powered the Heart of Gold halfway across the universe.

IF he does indeed read every thread and post he will be more than flabbergasted - being the orthodox atheist he was. The afterlife will in that case have come as a gargantuan surprise to him
Afterlife or not - he will continue to live in our minds as long as we remember him

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
