Okay, I've been talking with my friend (she's a Researcher who's gone out to lunch and hasn't yet returned) about the prospective cast for the film, and here's what my memory provides me, in no particular order:

Michael Palin - Arthur Dent
Pierce Brosnan - Ford Prefect*
Salma Hayek - Tricia McMillan/Trillian
Terry Jones (in woman voice) - Over-protective Eddie
Jim Carrey - Man at the pub who miscalculates Ford and Arthur's beers
John Cleese - Slartibartfast*
Clive Anderson
Eric Idle
Bruce McCullough - Benjy/Frankie*
David Foley - Frankie/Benjy*
Kevin MacDonald
Mark McKinney
Scott Thompson
Ed Robertson - Normal Eddie
Paul McCartney - The bartender at the pub

* - I'm not entirely sure about these.

I'll be keeping proper track of this supercast in A1009603.

If we're working towards an all-British cast, can I reiterate my suggestion of Mel and Sue as "Shooty" and "Bang-Bang"m the two cops that show up on Magrathea. smiley - biggrin

It's intended to be more-or-less all-British. I've heard rumours that Jim Carrey was being considered for a Disney incarnation of the film as Arthur, so I included him in a non-speaking cameo just to simultaneously mock and pacify those who want Carrey in the film. He would absolutely ruin it.

I seem to recall that I have Scott and Mark slated for the police on Magrathea. I also believe Clive was the voice of the Guide. Not sure, though.

I too read that it was being made by disney I sincerely hope that it is not animated. That would ruin the whole movie for me. It is just too good to be animated.

The problem with a Guide movie is that it would have to be a HUGE epic space-opera (i.e. Star Wars), divided into a minimum of 3 films (5 would be appropriate) and have a HUGE special effects budget. The TV Show was, in my humble opinion, a template of sorts, to see what could have been done if it would have had a budget of more than three dollars. My only problem is that David Dixon will always be Ford Prefect. No modern day actor could possibly replace him. Or could they?

Any ideas on casting a modern day HHGTtG trilogy feature?

smiley - okYes I agree. Being 62 I saw the first tv series and that has set the characters firmly in my mind so I could never accept "New" alternatives.
My personal favorite was Marvin the depressed Robot! "I don't know why I bother"
I still have the whole series on video tape "Beta" smiley - wah but I have lovingly kept an old Beta video in "working" order just so I can view them again.

If what I have read The Salmon of Doubt is true than it seems to me that new media (other than novels) would be exactly the type of venue in which DNA would have liked to seen his ideas and imagination expressed. Yes, it could be a disaster; and no, Disney was not his first choice; and no, it would not necessarily be a disaster because of Disney; and finally yes, Hitchhikers is more complex that Lord of the Rings. Well at least as big of a challenge for a committed and competent director. Oh dear.

OK, there is the worry of the development of the IID (Infinite Improbability Damper) or the EFP/HRG (Eisner Finite Probability / High Revenue Generator) that is hard wired into the creative minds @ Disney. But then again you never know. I believe that good Cinema is as capable of stimulating an imagination, as bad prose is capable of stifling an imagination.
I hope they do it.

Well being a fan of anything Adams i was quite dissapointed to see the list of ppl they have brought together for the latest visual offering of hitch hikers.
Mos Def as Ford? What the? Zooey Deschanel as Trillian? I'm afraid not. And wots with a dwarf playing the role of Marvin? Marvin is supposed to be a big, dull, bored-with-life robot not a happy little dwarf smiley - erm

Someone Ed-nortonish would've been good as Ford, and perhaps Joanna Page as Trillian (love actually her most recent film)and by the looks of it trillian is going to be dark haired. I kinda liked the idea of her being a blonde amongst the brunettes (as in the bbc t.v. series)

Personally although Douglas wasnt too fond of the t.v. series, i think it was perfectly cast and Hollywood should've used this as a reference for their casting.

2 ppl i am happy they've cast are Bill Nighy as Slarti (Ian McKellen or John Cleese could also have filled this role nicely) and Sam Rockwell as Zaphod (he has the perfect disposition for this role and even reminds me of Zaphod from the old t.v. series)
Well there's my 2 cents worth for now smiley - bubbly

The BBC Tv version is available on DVD - they have a copy at my university library. You may want to check the UK amazon.com or perhaps BBC itself?

"And wots with a dwarf playing the role of Marvin?"

Sadly, it's another example of Americans taking something a little too literally, in this case the line "Here I am, brain the size of a planet". The new Marvin costume is the same height as an average actor, but the head makes up half the body size. It looks quite cool, though - almost as if they're trying to imply that Sony and The Cyrius Cybernetics Corporation are one and the same... smiley - laugh

The TV version is out on DVD now. I found it at Suncoast.
The movie version will be out around 2005.

I don't like the actors they got for Ford and Marvin. I think I'm not the only one who never imagined Ford black and Marvin that midget from Willow and Leprichaun.

Those bits were never actually defined in the book as Adams went purely for story content, which makes for excellent, if short books.

If you can track down a copy of the photo illustrated version of THHGTTG you'll find a black/half-caste Zaphod which is fine with me smiley - ok

See the front page today for an a link to an official on Guide movie page smiley - winkeye

Megan - another transient astronomer

Well, Disney came to Jodrell Bank Observatory (www.jb.man.ac.uk) recently to film a few shots for the early part of the story - the bit where the Vogons turn up and, just before they destroy the planet, some scientists broadcast a message saying "but we've never been to Alpha Centauri!" Several of the staff got to be extras, and the Disney crew re-painted the control room a rather fetching drab grey colour. Eeek.
