Why do you sigh more when you're giving up smoking???

Possibly because your bored and really want a cigerette, feel that you need something to do with yourself (other than have a cig). any one of these things.
I'm going through it myself at the mo'

It's your body taking advantage of all that increased lung capacity. It hasn't worked out what to do with it yet. Don't worry, though - soon you'll be jumping around like Superman, pouncing on all those nasty Nick O' Teen types and converting them to a better way of life (arrgh)...

One of those things you thought you'd managed to forget!

The giving up smoking guide entry ( http://www.h2g2.com/A293401 ) is one of the best community efforts, however it does nopt mention increased sighing.
I myself am off them a little over a year and don't think I sigh more than I used to - perhaps it is a withdrawal symptom that passes? It is also possible that the sighing is a way of getting sudden blasts of oxygen into your blood stream which would have a similarily uplifting effect to the high of a nicotine hit - perhapos your body is compensating for this?

Tha's a very good notion!
The sighing I think may only be a temporary thing. I'm also finding myself talking more complete gibberish than normal, it's like my brain's working on overload cuz it's got nothing to fog it up!
Good luck to those trying for the new year! Got things planned to do in the evening every day except Thursday so I'm not tempted. Thankfully the shops are too far away to walk in the dark and I don't drive so no mad nicotine dashes of an evening. Going to go to John Lewis later to buy a "make your own cuddly toy" kit, too keep my fingers busy!

Good luck.
My two top tips were: (1) - reward yourself by spending the money on luxury (such as cinema tickets or a meal out or something) and (2) if you get a physical craving try holding your breath as long as you can. The depleted oxygen message to your brain will help mask the cravings.

...Just make sure you don't get addicted to John Lewis make-your-own cuddly toy kits. We have to have a spearate room at work where people can go for a quick stitch every hour or so - it's murder

I've been biting my nails really badly lately. One bad habbit for another I guess.

I just crawled out of the smoking section of a plane and I can quite honestly say that I was ready to murder them. They came in relay teams each holding their little white battons and taking it in turns to fill the end of the plane in grey hase.
Smoking is not sexy. You get yellow fingers and horrible teeth and a crap smell on all your clothes not to mention the severe lack of reddies in your wallet. Quit Now ! You know it makes sense. It is cheap keeps you healthy and makes you more attractive to the opposite sex. What more could you ask for.

Hi there everybody, just wanted to congratulate you all for what I think is one of the best ventures a sane person could take upon him/ her self. ( Well, that and going hiking in Nepal. But then, the Himalyas are also prone to be more enjoyable with helthy lungs!)
So good luck to you all and keep going!

Good grief - where do they still have smoking sections in airplanes?
I thought they were stopped universally, after the Air Canada thingy.

*stunned*
I flew for the first time when I was 40, I don't remember smokers on the plane. Maybe it's different rules for each airline...
This New Year's Eve marked the 7th anniversary of me successfully kicking the dreaded weed, I'd smoked for 21 years.
Before I gave up, I'd got so ~sick~ of it, I really hated it, the drain on my resources, the dependence, the inconvenience...{trying to find somewhere open at midnight when you've run out & can't sleep}.
I finally decided ~I~ was the master and it was the slave, and kicked it for good.
Duncan's right about self-reward...it's great to have money to spend on yourself; I manage a night out once a month {then I just have to avoid smokers}
And I could only consider partners/dates who don't smoke.
I've developed an allergy to it; but at least I'm over the cravings & addiction. I did it without patches/acupuncture/hypnotism-whatever.
I pity people who smoke now. I enjoy the smell of flowers as I pass people's gardens and I can smell the bakery a block away...

Hi A.G.B! I remember talking to you at the H2G2 christmas meet up and you were saying you had a big problem with smoking, or rather people smoking round you. It must be hard, as lets face it there's no escaping it, well unless you live in certain parts of America where smoking is banned everywhere, even in the street! What is it that bothers you so much after 7 years of not smoking? Is it that is repulses you or is it the temptation of giving in and starting up again?
I gave up a ten year habit when I first got pregnant. I quit just like that and was amazed that I was doing so well for so long without any aids - it lasted for about the first three months or so, then I started smoking again - only if I have a drink, and I hardly drink at all as I'm still pregnant. It's funny, I don't think of them at all or feel like one until I drink a drop of alcohol. It's like I can't have one without the other and lets face it they're both bad for you so I should really avoid them both!

I used to be like that with tea & cigs.
I had to give up tea for a while!
No, I have no cravings, it's more like an allergy.
My eyes hurt & go red, then start to stream.
My clothes offend me with the stench.
It's amazing smokers can't smell it on themselves.
Even their hair!
And I know you can't!
Ask any ex-smoker, it bothers us all!
I try not to complain though, I just move away.
However I won't let anyone smoke in my home.

Realising that having a fag isn't going to help anything when you're having a bad day also helps. Had a couple on Friday night when out for drinkies, and a couple on Sunday when I found a few in one of my coats, but apart from that I'm staying free and enjoying a clearer brain!

Not smoking while you are out drinking is the WORST!
I have only had one since the first. My dads own special blend (I had to try it). The thing nearly knocked me on my ass.
I am still getting the urge/craving to light up every now and then but it is realy easy to just ignore now.

Lear (the Unready) Posted Jan 17, 2001
The smoking / drinking connection is a difficult one to overcome. The instinct to light up whilst in the pub is incredibly strong and probably genetically inherited from our less health conscious forebears. The only foolproof solution I can give is to quit drinking as well, which will also have the beneficial side-effect of helping to clear still further the once-befuddled head. But I suspect that might not appeal to everybody, or in fact anybody at all...
