Is it...

Water, water, everywhere, and not a drop to drink.

...or...

Water, water, everywhere, nor any drop to drink.

...?

Ah, I know the answer to this one: it is simply a matter of how big your fingers are as 'r' and 't' (being the main difference between 'nor' and 'not') are next to each other on the keyboard.

So people with big fingers write 'Watert, watert everty wherte, butr notr a drtop tro drtink.'

New Researcher 160637 (waiting for a small fingered nickname to occur)

just to inform you that a small fingered nickname has now occured. Just as the Artist formally known as 'Mince' successfully turned himself into 'Thimble', Researcher 160637 has now turned into Sushi Wong.

A number of factors were taken into consideration before settling on Sushi Wong. For the Making Of... pls read on:

I like Sushi but unfortunately I am often wrong.

Asians - that's where Sushi comes from - traditionally can't pronounce their 'R's and so it kind of fits in nicely by being left out.

Also of course we have just an indepth debate about 'R' and 'T' and so it is incredibly apt that a Front Line Pun Attack be mounted here and so pencil the name Sushi Wong into the Guide far more effectively than any 1960's film could ever do.

Thank you, then why does the GuideML correct syntax for Sub-Editors have the wrong version? And can I be given lots of money for spotting the mistake?

smiley - ermI wouldn't be so sure that the quote on that site was the correct one. Maybe H2G2 got it right.

No, it's definitely "nor any drop to drink." I had to do a report on Coleridge last year, and that was one of the things I had a good theraputic yell at a number of people about. Wouldn't believe me until I showed them the line in the textbook. And don't go saying the textbook's got it wrong either, someone wrote an extremely dull and rambling essay on the subject and bored me nearly to tears.
