There are ways. I run two of my three groups over the internet, with currently one person in America, one in South Korea (whom I have never met) and three in Japan (two of whom I have never met). We use the website Roll20 for combat encounters and one of several options - Roll20's own shaky voice system, Skype, Discord - for voice. Sessions are usually agreed over Facebook.

I'm currently playing two games, one 3.5 and one 5th ed. I'm also into LRP and I like the collaborative storytelling aspect best. Possibly unsurprisingly, I prefer 5th to 3.5 as there are So Many Rules in 3.5 (I did pick Paladin, so I have to rules for my mount as well as for myself which seems... unnecessary!).
